Medications for mental health

I've always wondered what point an adult needs to get to before they can accept the fact that they need some sort of brain chemistry-altering medication.

I'm an anti-hypochondriac and my actually recognizing that I am sick usually comes to me when I flat out can not function... everything else is "normal paramters"

I've just been wondering if mabye I'm just another one of the screwed up people that "can't take it" without chemical help.... it may very well be the extreeme stress talking, but whenever I'm not in class or at work, I just stare into space. I get a feeling of relaxation just sitting in the middle of the parking lot at work.

Not knowing what's wrong, combined with anxiety is really scary. 🙁

just curious what you guys think as I know that things like ADD and ADHD are really really common amognst us computer guys (3 of every 4 I know in real life).

edit: I'm not going to put up with trolls, sorry for even bothering with this thread

I know that sensory integration dysfunction is most commonly misdiagnosed as add/adhd, so don't take that 75% figure to the bank.
Have you seen a doctor?

no, but I know what they'll tell me. they'll tell me that I need to cut back on my work schedules, focus on my schoolwork or some other crap like that. I used to love working with computers and playing video games, but I've completley lost interest in everything... i dunno....

I'm not saying I'm only interested in the responses of people with ADD or ADHD, but I know a lot of computer guys in particular have been diagnosed with things and I'm just wondering how you deal with it

I always argued back and forth with my mother about taking medication and seeing psychologists growing up. For the most part I enjoyed talking with a psychologist once or twice a week, but never wanted to take medication about it- we really got into it a lot of times, and I got really into it with some adamant doctors, too, at times.
I took prozac for a little bit and ritelin for a short time when I was about 13~14.
My parents got divorced when I was 15, and I lived with friends until I moved out more 'on my own' when I was 17. I stopped seeing doctors about mental health and didn't even consider taking medication until about 2 years ago, when I was 21 or 22. I independently decided to see a psychologist again, picked from my insurance list, and eventually decided to try some drugs. I took effexor, but had side effects, then lexapro and eventually stacked that with wellbutrin SR and then wellbutrin XL. Then tweaked the dosage (the maximum for both), and that worked really well for me. I lost my insurance earlier this year and had to come off the drugs, which incurs debilitating headaches.
I have insurance again and will be taking the meds again soon.
I have more of a problem with depression and, lately, a big problem with aggression.

I think being a father, and wanting to be a more effective role model for my kids is really what made me decide to try it again.
I believe it was the right choice for me.
Does this help?

Does sitting down and staring into space accomplish anything? Oh hey, looks like it does. Having done that in the past, but been unable to do recently, don't feel so bad, there. When you can't zone out, it'll be worse.

ADD is actually not much more common in geeks than other folks. Aspergers is.

Anyway, let's say you have ADD...what would you want/need the medication for? Where would it be causing you problems?

Lack of interest in things you generally liked doing would be more along the lines of mild depression or dissociation.

If you can try mild lifestyle/diet changes instead of drugs, I'd think that would be something to go for first.

Good luck, w/ or w/o professional help.
