I would like to know what MediaConcept's h.264 V2 can do for video without the techno-jargon :D

I understand that h.264 is a newer standard for encoding video. Could someone give me an example of how someone uses the software to compress video (i.e. what type of video) and why? Would someone take an existing video and make it bigger or smaller with MediaConcept h.264?

I have found a number of websites out there, but they use clever marketing terms that don't really mean a darn ;)

I notice that it has some really nifty features for HD videos.

What would an individual do with video on a camcorder/dv device or whatever they use to capture video.

BTW, what players play h.264? I tried using VLC, and WMP11... neither play, I either just get sound in WMP11, or nothing in VLC (the latest VLC btw).

Thank you for your input :D

You probably mean MainConcept H.264 V2. You likely won't get much better quality than using a free codec like x264.

You generally give the program an uncompressed video, and it compresses it using lossy methods and saves the stream into the file format you specify. x264 receives a raw YUV stream (and possibly others). You can probably give it a high bit-rate compressed video and make it even smaller, though it's not as preferable as having an uncompressed stream.

Any player that uses DirectShow (including WMP, Nero ShowTime, Media Player Classic) can play H.264 if you have the DirectShow decoder filter. Additionally, any using libavcodec (mplayer-gui, VLC, ffdshow) can also play H.264. You may also need a demuxer (to interpret the file format) and an audio codec to play a file, so don't assume it's failing because of H.264. VLC should have a log that describes exactly what went on, as should Media Player Classic.
