media test failure, check cable

just built a new computer with athlon xp 2500+ and asus a7n8x deluxe. Now when I turn it on I get a bunch of error messages, which are as follows in the order they appear,

Floppy disk(s) fail (40) : the floppy disk light is lit when i turn on the system and the cable is properly connected.

Primary channel: Drive not found
Secondary channel: Drive not found

even though it detects my hdd (wd800jb) and cd-rom (my old dell cd-rom) in bios.

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

This one worries me the most. I am trying to boot from cd-rom in order to install an OS. Nothing is happening. Any suggestion will be appreicated. Thanks.

1) Go into the bios, make sure all the drive detection options are set to auto.
2) Try a different floppy/try that floppy in a different computer.
3) Check your drives in a different computer (if you can)
4) Try a different power supply
5) Try plugging your drives in on that motherboard with an ide controller card if you can borrow one.

Floppy disk(s) fail (40) : the floppy disk light is lit when i turn on the system and the cable is properly connected.

The twist in the cable ALWAYS goes to the end the floppy disk is on! Make sure the red painted wire is oriented in the same direction as your IDE ribbons on the motherboard side. The red is usually on the same side as the power cable (or to the RIGHT when viewed from the FRONT of the drive) on the floppy disk.

IF you have the twisted end going to the motherboard (even plugged in correctly both ways) the light will glow and the system will hang for a while at "VERIFYING DMI..." etc.

What kind of video card are you using? I remember GF3's would NOT work on Iwill KK266's. Funniest thing I ever saw. Made the floppy drive go up in smoke! :Q

ok the red wire was on the opposite side, but the twisted end was attached to the floppy drive. I have only one monitor so I haven't tried it yet. Will do it after I am done with what I am doing right now. I am using ATI Radeon 9100.

Any other suggestions, guys?
