Media players don't work correctly during games

When I'm playing World of Warcraft and I try to alt tab to watch a video on WMP, WMPclassic, or any other media player I get the sound but no image. If I close the game, the video will play perfectly. This used to never be an issue and I'm not sure what's changed between now and then. I tried reinstalling codecs but that didn't help. Any advice?

That's because the video players use overlays. For WMP, set to VMR9 by tools, options, advanced, performance, use high quality mode. For Media Player Classic, it's view, options, playback, output, VMR9 (renderless).

You shouldn't be running other apps when playing games IF you really want real performance and it doesn't matter how fast that system is or what you have in the way of memory, running other apps while gaming can and will over time cause system instability.

Do one or the other but not both. 😉

I tried changing the overlay setting but that didn't help, any other ideas?

I'm not sure I agree with you DasFox on that point but either way I think I'm willing to risk it - i've been multitasking with games for the better (or maybe worse) part of 10 years.
