Media players aren't utilizing GPU in my new laptop

So i just got an Asus M50VM-A1:

Vista Home Premium
C2D P8300
9600GS
4GB RAM

I installed VLC and the K-Lite codec pack. For some reason, when i play my 720p .mkv files the cpu usage skyrockets. The video card doesn't get any warmer when i monitor it in rivatuner.

I can't think of any reason why neither VLC or WMP11 are not using the GPU to offload the video from the cpu. Anyone have any ideas? Settings that might be wrong, etc...

Thanks!

those programs aren't using the gpu because they weren't written to use gpu. there is nothing you can do about it.

Bingo. If you want acceleration, you need to use something like PowerDVD or MPC-HC's built in codecs.

Media Player Classic Home Cinema will use GPU acceleration and is free.

I thought WMP uses the gpu when you have purevideo with an NVidia card?

It gets complicated, but generally no.
