media player problem

I'm not sure what i installed that made this error, but here's my problem. When i try to play some avi files all it says is playing but nothing on the screen shows up and there is no sound. I tried fast fowarding a bit and it doesn't help. I know these files works because it plays on my winamp 3.0 but not in windows media player. WHat's more i can't even view streaming videos off of websites anymore either, the picture i get is all garbled but i still get sound. ANY IDEAS??? I'm not sure if it's the xp service pack 1 i instaled or this ogm codec i installed... but i've uninstalled the ogm codec and i'm still having the same problems... HELP me!!! thanks..

Sounds like you could do with re-installing WMP8 but the link I had is down now , there is a new verion WMP9 but it's beta right now on the MS web site WMP9 Beta .

my guess is that it is more likely a codec problem even though you uninstalled the old codec... try downloading divx codec 5.
