Media Player goes crazy with CPU usage

Occasionally my Windows Media Player 6.4 goes crazy and starts to gobble up all my CPU time, with near 100% CPU usage. My system then slows down very very significantly and everything goes in slow motion. I try a Crtl-Alt-Del to end the mplayer2 task, but its not there. Yet, I can see the process running at near 100% CPU usage when I use Wintop. What is going on, and how can I correct this?
