Are there any good, free alternatives to Windows Media player for playing mpegs, avis, asf, etc in Windows 2000. I'm sick of WMP and would like to switch to something less bloated and worthless.
Ditto. MPC is highly recommended. It even plays QuickTime now!
MPC is a clone of WMP 6.4 with extra features. If you really did not need them you could still use ye olde WMP 6.4 (mplayer2.exe) instead of the bloaty later ones.
Real Media codecs can be had sans player in Pack Damrod.
Or you could install a Real player and disable some of the bloat. See here.
Or you could install a Real player, backup the codecs, remove the player and restore the codecs (same result as first option). See here.
I don't know where you guys are getting the notion that WMP 9 is extremely bloated. If you turn off the visualizations, it should load about as fast as Winamp 2.81.
