Media Player for Ubuntu

I'm new at Linux, and was wondering what Media Player will work with it. It appears to have Totem but it won't open windows media files.

A lot of people like mplayer. If you get that, make sure to get the w32codecs package too, to install additional video and audio codecs (including WMV). In fact, try just installing the w32codecs first and see if totem works any better.
My own preference is the vlc video player. It's lightweight and supports a lot of formats out of the box.

definately read on Ubuntu's website about 'restricted' formats. Things like wmv files required special licensing terms in order to use the codecs to play them back. Ubuntu's website has faqs and stuff like that, also a google search is helpfull (just make sure that it's for your specific version of Ubuntu they are talking about otherwise it can be confusing), and they'll show you how to get them installed easily and such.

I just use totem or whatever is gnome default. But Xine is fine and VLC is very very good since it supports a very wide range of things.
