Media player for a car

I'm looking for recommendation on a media player for car use.

My superfly minivan has a DVD player with a ceiling video screen. DVDs are a pain to deal with. But the system also has component inputs (I think - I get the names mixed up but we have inputs with the yellow red white). I would like a media player with internal HDD (since it'll be in a car streaming off my home network is an obvious no go and needing a separate external HDD adds complexity) where I can just load all the kids' videos on the media player and bring the media player into the car to have all their "shut the hell up and zone out you little punks" entertainment in the car and easily accessed.

The videos are mostly ISO disc images, with some mkv files from BD stuff. Ability to play some of the other stuff like avi xvid etc. would be nice but don't currently have video in those formats. I really want ease here, so don't want to have to convert anything into different formats. Just want to load up the thing with video files then bring it out to the car and have it work. Therefore the media player should be able to handle all those video types. As my wife is the minivan driver/kid wrangler, the controls on the media player need to be pretty straightforward - she hated a popcorn hour we briefly had and refused to deal with it but can handle xbmc and windows media center, if that gives you an idea of what I'm going for.

So. Anyone know of something that fits the bill? Thanks in advance.

Thanks. After a quick perusal that looks to be aimed at stuff that's more complicated and PC-ey than I want. I'm looking for something more appliance like.

Looked at newegg and found this, which may be the sort of thing I'm looking for:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-001-_-Product

The interface may be kludgy but I may end up just ordering something like that and trying it if I don't get any first hand feedback.

I have a Popcorn Hour A-200.. but it may not be be wife friendly.

I bought the Nixues Fusion HD a few weeks ago and it has the most user friendly interface I have seen (Our house also has an ASUS, and we had WDTVs in the past)...

It plays all the files you are lookng for, can install an internal hard drive (and you can transfer files via USB or network), and connect an external hard drive or external usb powered DVD player.

Here is the link:

Here is some Youtube videos I found that taught me how to use it:

I don't know how it will connect in your "SUPERFLY" Mini Van because it doesn't come with a car charger adapter...:hmm:

I bought mines from Amazon... but I think you can get it cheaper here with free ground shipping and free premium HDMI cable:

How do you plan on controlling the thing when you can't see what's on the screen? Unless you have something playing before you get in to drive.

Cool. Thanks. I will check out the YouTube videos when I get home. That sounds like just the sort of thing I'm looking for.

And my van is so hella supafly that there is a 110v outlet right next to the video inputs.

If you see a minivan or big SUV with a woman and small children inside driving next to you, change lanes as soon as it is safe to put a little distance between you and the other vehicle.

D:

Honey! If you read this, I'm talking about other women. Not you. I know you would pull over while operating any DVD player or other media player, texting, doing your hair...

ipad+Velcro.

obd-2 bluetooth

done.

For the life of me I can't figure out what you mean by this.

The obd-2 bluetooth part? No idea what that's for.

And the iPad seems really expensive and provides a screen that I don't need (car already has an LCD screen with inputs), not nearly enough storage (64GB at most), and as far as I can tell does not play back the video formats I'm interested in (DVD ISOs and MKV from BD).

I suggest portable media players from Cowon or Aluratek. They should be easy to use and to hook up to your display. Just to note, do not keep these players in a car because these devices will be damaged by the heat. You have to use specialized devices to be used in a car because the heat can get close to 200 degrees F. Any device that can not handle this heat should not be left in the car.

BTW, there is always the old fashion duct tape.

so you can monitor and log most engine stats. chinese alibaba junk. works. if you have a more sophisticated app like vagcom you can get super finite details.

obd-2 is the JTAG of cars - its how hackers get in (turn up the boost!) and its hot data gets out (to figure out what you've just done!).
