OK... what am I missing?

I put Media Player Classic 6.4.9.0 (the one from sourceforge) on my dads computer running win98se

I get the error "cannot render file" when attempting to play an audio cd.

mp3 and wma work fine -- just not regular cd audio

also installed is the k-lite codec pack

What do I need for regular audio?
I searched the forums on sourceforge -- with limited success.
Some people say they installed wmp10, and then it worked. Others say mpc just doesn't work with audio cd's.

The former is what I want to avoid. The latter just sounds absurd.

any help would be appreciated
