A lot of videos that worked fine in windows media player 7.1 in windows 98/SE/ME/2k don't work in windows XP professional under windows media player 8. I see that it trys to find codecs and fails and only plays the audio portion of the video. Most are avi files. Some of them only play the video and not the audio. I have downloaded and installed almost all of the codecs that I was able to find and haven't had any luck. I have downloaded the codecs from ligos, divx, crystal codecs, and some others that I don't recall. Is there any way to tell what codec it is looking for? Are there any good programs or sites that will tell me what it is? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have tried many other viewers with the same problems. ie. vcdplayer, global divx player, etc.

Try to view the movie (usually DivX has problem.) with Older mediaplayer version. The 6.4 version is already installed in your machine.
Just find the \program files\windows mediaplayer\mplayer2.exe and run the program. Or you can associate DivX files to the mplayer2.exe program.. good luck

If above doesn't work you can always try with older codec like 4.02 (which I'm using at the moment) also you can find good utilites at www.doom9.net

well, I had to do.. clean install of win XP + install of codec 4.02 +Use WMP 6.4
I'm not sure whether clean install was necessary but it cleaned the clogged files at least..
Could be simply you are missing the necessary codecs or combination of problems..

What kind of files did you try, and also do the problem still exists if you use different players like the playa..
I had stuttering problem with the playa before.. I think it had something to do with te latest codec..
