Hey all,

Not sure if this was the correct place to post, I am new to these forums. So my apologies in advance if this is misplaced.

I am looking to build a single PC to act as a media player and file server. It will be running Linux (/w MythTV), maybe Windows Media Center or Vista in the future. Also, the computer it is replacing is a dedicated Linux box acting a router, so this PC will also need to do that.

I have the software side covered, but could use some recommendations on hardware. Here's the outline of my goals:

Whisper quiet, yet cool running
TV Tuner with recording functionality
RAID 5 setup with at least 800 GB storage with ability to expand (SATA)
DVI and SVideo output
5.1 Surround sound

I decided upon a mid ATX tower. Originally, I was going to go for a Media PC case, but couldn't find one that could adequately hold the multiple hard drives and not run into heat issues. I am still open to going this route if anyone has any good recommendations for a case that gives decent airflow and enough room for 3 hard drives.

I could use a good recommendation on a processor and motherboard. I don't need anything too beefy, but I do not have a lot of experience with utliizing integrated mobo RAID. Is it better to get an expansion card instead?

Also, I need a soundcard with 5.1 support and that will run under Linux. I am a bit of a Linux noob. I checked out ALSA which seems to put out generic audio drivers for Linux, but their compatibility database hasn't been updated since 2005. Any ideas?

I found the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 500 which sports dual TV Tuners and is listed as being compatible with MythTV, so I think I am all set there.

And Newegg has Samsung Spinpoint 400GB SATA 3.0 drives for $110, so I plan on getting 3 of these to run in a raid 5 array for a total of 800 GB of redundant storage.

I also was eyeing a Microsoft optical Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo. Will it be tough to find Linux support for this? From what I've found so far, it seems like this should work no problem, but obviously anyone with Bluetooth Linux support could help shed some light on this for me.

Aside from my specific questions, any other suggestions, comments, etc are very much welcome.

Thanks!

Moterboard Raid 5 will not allow any expansion and they are extremely slow in terms of write speed. So if you are going to record HD shows ad stream alot of stuff with it, the HD performance might kill you.
