Media Center Slideshows look blurry

So I recently installed windows XP media center edition on my laptop. I was checking out some of the features, and I loaded one of the default HD slideshows that came pre-packaged on the system. I was very impressed with the images, and in particular, the display screen on my lap top. I eagerly loaded up all of my vacation photos from the past year that I've taken with my Canon 350D. These images are something like 3072x2304, my display is only 1680x1050, so I figured they'd look pretty sharp. Unfortunately, they look really blurry and slightly pixelated.

My guess is media center is using some form of a bilinear transform to reduce the images in size to fit the screen, and the original HD pics I saw that were preloaded are set to be right around HD resolution, therefore bypassing any resizing. What I don't understand is why the resizing is so crappy. When I turn on the "my pictures slideshow" as a screen saver, my pictures look crisp and sharp. How is it a cheapo add-in screensaver outperforms the media center slideshow? Is there anyway I can improve the appearance in the media center slideshow? Short of manually cropping/resizing all my pictures for it, of course.
