I have more tuner-capture cards than I need, but enough to choose from if there are "issues" with drivers and configurations.
Wanted to put an Hauppauge PVR-250 (analog) in my latest E8600+SLI build, but too many forum posts about problems with drivers for VISTA 64 with that (older) card.
So I popped in an Hauppauge PVR-500-MCE and there was no need for driver installation; VISTA 64 had them, and the dual tuners seems copacetic and "working properly" under Device Manager.
I have another system using XP MCE 2005, with an Avermedia 780 card (analog/digital). Under that system, Media Center doesn't seem to contain a recognition of the S-Video interface on the card. And, on the Avermedia, I have to use an A/V(yellow)-to-SVideo converter plug.
Software like SageTV recognizes all ports (or it did on my older Pentium4 system). But also, SageTV and even the Avermedia software will conflict with Media Center.
As I thought about this seeming Media Center limitation, I wondered if I ran the configuration wizard when there was a signal-generating connection plugged in to the S-Video plug on the card.
So now, I'm getting ready to configure the PVR-500 on the VISTA 64 system. Will VISTA's Media Center Wizard see the A/V (yell-red-white) ports without connecting to a signal? Or should I plug in the cable to a VCR or cable-box before I run the configuration wizard?
I suppose I can work through this by trial and error on my own (which I usually do), but it may have implications for whether or not I should re-run the wizard on the XP machine as well.
I mostly want to get high-quality analog captures from the VISTA-with-PVR-500 system, which the XP-with-Avermedia doesn't seem to do using (non-MCE) capture software. I get MPG files that have a washed-out look to them with the AverMedia. This could be a software issue, and I need to know if I misconfigured the XP Media Center by not having an active signal coming in on the S-Video port.
