media center pc

Ok So I need help with a project that I?m working on, that will come online in the next few months.

Over the past oh lots of years, Since basically 6-8 odd years, between me and my fiancée, we a large collection of movies.

This will probably increase somewhat as time goes on, but the rate at which is going up has over time decreased. And so the need to future expansion is going down.

Its just frustrating to flip through the dvds to find the one we are looking for, and if someone pulled it out, and put it somewhere else its just a pain.

Along with a large music collection, and now the hook up to say a yahoo music /napster pay per month (cheap, lots of variety, so I don?t own it, bahh, I can listen to hundreds err thousands of songs for 6 bucks a month, and have my family do so legally, without fear is worth 6 bucks).

I would like to setup a nice media center pc. I like parts that are both cheap, but also a great value. I won?t just buy something because its cheap, and fills 80% the need.

Already have a hdtv, which will in time get upgraded.

Heres what I would like:

A PC that can store or access all my dvds, when I load and back them up to a hard drive.

This same pc should be able to play back these dvds, have software that atomically or easily catalogs the movies, and can display / download covers/ pictures so its easy/ ?pretty? to browse through the movie collection.

The pc needs to output these movies in the highest quality possible. I.E. up convert, to a standard hd-resolution of at least 1080I, and in the future 1080p. So that they do not look like complete crap, the output should be hdmi at best, dvi is good, component is alright, nothing lower.

The software running should be easy to use, and possible come with a remote, or remote support so I can program my harmony to use it.

Components should be as low power as possible, so that the need for fans is as low as possible.

A good power save mode, if possible so that it can be turned off to not waster power.

Output the sound in a digital format that will but output to a receiver.

This would be nice, but not required.
Function as a dvr / hddvr, that can accept both over the air, and qam signals.

Thanks for any / all help

DVDs require 4 - 9 GB each and PC playback can be hard to get as good as a $100 upconverting DVD player, so investing in a good DVD rack might make more sense than a pair or more of 750GB hard drives.

Moving your entire music CD collection to a PC _is_ practical, storing losslessly only uses about 30 GB per 100 CDs.

For Napster you can use almost any PC.

AVSForum.com people would know better, but I don't know of any reasonbly priced tuner cards that can work as a HD DVR for cable/sat encrypted HD.

One nice PC that would work for music only is the Shuttle X100, see it at us.shuttle.com and it is reviewed at sudhian.com

ya its mainly for the dvds, and it would take a couple of 750 gb drives.

So whats a rack dvd? just like a hugh dvd changer?

If you decide to build, see the Antec NSK2400 case review at www.SilentPCReview.com

To make a Napster + CD changer PC to use with VGA input of HDTV I'd add:
- Biostar TForce 6100 (either socket 754 or 939) - onboard audio has digital out, passive cooled chipset so no fans
- socket 754 or 939 CPU
- Zalman 7000-alcu HSF

This should be cheap and very quiet.

No, I meant a big shelf and just learn to put discs back where they belong 🙂

Sony does make 400-DVD changers for $400, but the reviews at Crutchfield aren't great.

How many DVDs do you have now?

If you need to store more than about 150 you're talking about a RAID-5 array of several 750 GB drives, a big tower case to store them, a RAID controller or expensive motherboard with extra SATA ports, and a large time investment.

oh ya its past 150.

I saw the sony, and its the cheapest plain solution, but ya reviews are iffy.

I love and hate AVSforums.

I love them for how much info they have. I ?hate? them because there a/v elites, and have there own ways of doing things, which to newbies is hard to get into. A 80+ page disccusion on a tv or piece of hardware, and the only way to follow is to read the WHOLE thing, hurts the head.

As for price, I?m not looking for cheap.

And while a nice self would work and is the cheapest way to go. I?m one of those people that has all these dvds, but would rather not show off. I?ve been to some people?s houses and they show off there dvd/cd collections like its cool. To me, after a while its tacky.

The biggest concern I have is in the video/audio output. It just needs to work, so if the wife, or something turns it on. The menu is there, they click what movie they want to play, and it plays. No worrying about switching resolutions, etc.

That might mean custom coding for the library interface, if Media Center doesn't work well enough for you.

How about an enclosed storage cabinet so the DVDs are behind wood panels / doors? Low-key, low-tech, but also incredibly low-effort 🙂

The back of Sound & Vision mag has ads for wood storage cabinets that look like furniture instead of a DVD rental shop.
