I've had XP MCE running well for a year now on a C2Q system with AverMedia's M780 dual-tuner-capture PCI-E "Combo" card.
Perhaps the reason I chose MCE for this machine -- barring a "wait-and-see" attitude about VISTA -- was to get a feel for how well MCE worked with my tuner-capture and TV sources.
But I also wanted to make captures from my VCR.
While I could configure the analog and digital tuners, I could not figure out how to configure the composite VCR connection.
This led me to use different capture software, such as Roxio's (version 10) and SageTV's (version 5). Sooner or later, I discovered that I had problems with these softwares with symptoms that pointed to some conflict with MCE's ehrecvr and ehsched services. I disabled ehrecvr. Disabling the ehsched service raises error entries in my Event Viewer, so I left it enabled/automatic.
I finally just disabled MCE access to the TV components. I discovered that -- at minimum -- I could get SageTV to work properly.
In further experimentation for an upgrade version of SageTV v.6, I decided to re-enable MCE and see if the conflicts I'd seen before persisted.
Suddenly now, with TV access re-enabled and the services set back to automatic, I get repeating "ehrecvr must close . . . . . send data to Micrsoft" windows. The only way to eliminate that problem quickly was to go back to the disabled configuration for TV under MCE, and set the services to disabled.
If there is a way to fix this so I could at least test SageTV's compatibility with MCE, I'd like to know what it is.
