media center extender as software

Is there any way (linux or windows) to run windows media center extender on an old laptop?
it would be the ideal solution to reuse an old laptop as an extender and it is much more powerful than the old xbox or most of the extender boxes you can buy.

why cant you download media center alone?

Because I am looking for a way to watch live TV from other rooms via the main Media Center PC.

I had hoped there might be a linux hack or some hacked OS form one of those hardware extenders ...

Nope. The only thing you can do is have one media center with multiple extenders hanging off of it. If you have multiple tuners, one user can watch one live show on one extender, while another person watches another live show on another extender. Or they could watch two different recorded shows. Or any combination.

Wouldn't something like a Slingbox work? Actually, a Hauppauge PCTV To Go Wireless HD (aka Hava Wireless HD) emulates a TV tuner that is accessible and controlled by any XP or Vista MCE PC on the network.

Can a single media extender access multiple media centers?
