1. Will you be able to upgrade regular XP pro to MCE 2005?

2. Will you be able to upgrade MCE 2004 to MCE 2005?

Thanks

Is there a compatibility list with this OS? I see newegg sells it by itself now (even though MS says it is only in OEM computers). I'd like to buy it but I wouldn't like to get it, know that neither of my TV cards work with it and that I spent $134 for nothing.

I have been reading about this for a while but like always, MS forgets to tell you what hardware you need. Will MS ever learn? Anyway, I am really thinking of buying the OS (although newegg raised the damn price $6 in the last 24 hours). According to that link, it looks like either of my video cards should work but what I want to know is, what do you need to output it to the TV? A TV out card? You'd need sound with that too. I know they will sell extender boxes soon and I guess that just hook up to the network (but they don't tell you much about them either, after all, it is hardware, something MS doesn't seem to realize the concept of). Seems they do not sell them as of yet even though the MS site says HP does.

Depends on the TV, but yea, you'll need a graphic card with the ouput for the display you want to drive. Here's the setup info from Microsoft Link

Anybody read any reviews about gaming performance? I'm kind of a novice-I am interested if I can build a PVR/decent gaming rig in the next month or 2.

I built a MCE system last week. I would not upgrade XP to MCE. It is definately different.

Tv Tuners get a Hardware Mpeg2 card Hauppauge PVR 250, 150 ect or the ATI ehome wonder FM works fine. (picture quality for the E-home wonder is better in MCE than it was in XP Pro) The ATI HDTV wonder is listed but people are having fits with it.
Video cards Ati Radeon 9550 or greater Nvidia 5700 SE or greater 128mb is recommended. Get one with TV out.
DVD decoder Intervideo works Nvidia is recommended but not released.

CPU 2.4 celeron 533 is working fine for Tv viewing. I would go with a P4 3.0 if you want to do much DVD burning or HDTV.

I've heard of problems with 915 chipset's onboard sound.

Ati Catalyst drivers work, but I had trouble with Catalyst Control Center.

I would recommend putting a second huge drive in. It will fill a hard drive in no time.

It is a really cool OS the level of integration is amazing, I'm much happier with MCE than XP pro with Sage tv (although Sage does have it's benefits). Buy the remote.
