HD7970 GE is showing 2x the performance of HD6970 in this game and it goes neck and neck with GTX590/6990. Nice improvement from Cats 12.11 for GCN architecture compared to VLIW. GTX690 is untouchable naturally. Great to see that SLI and CF work well on launch day.

Those numbers look great.

I'm and work and can't see the results (websense) But let me guess the 7950/7970 are rocking this game now.

HD7950/7970 more or less tie GTX670/680 while HD7970GE is 11-15% faster than the 680. In other words, NV's performance advantage in Frostbite 2.0 has evaporated. I'll wait for other reviews and link them here if I find more.

With MSAA - 1080P
7970 GE = 68 fps avg
GTX680 = 59
HD7970 = 59
HD7950 = 52
GTX670 = 51

With MSAA - 1600P
7970 GE = 39
GTX680 = 35
HD7970 = 34
GTX670 / 7950 = 30

Thanks RS. I'm home and having a look now. Scaling looks nice on both AMD/NVidia for Mid and high cards. At least for 1080p.

Wow, another modern game where the out dated 5870 (a DX10 card with DX11 bolted on, as I've read here by some) out paces the GTX 470 and even GTX 480 depending on the settings. The 5870 is part of the legendary trio in my opinion (the Radeon 9700 and GeForece 8800GTX being the other two).

Maybe a small jab. :) But truly, the 5870 has stood up well for being over three years old now. You wouldn't expect a three year old card to still be able to push 1600P no AA or 1080P 4xAA resolution modern games at fairly playable frame rates. I mean, it is competing with midrange cards at this point, but if you bought in Sept. of 09 you could still be gaming on new games today with it as long as your expectations were realistic (sorry, not getting 60FPS with 1600P and AA, but playable for sure).

Agreed. For me HD5870 has eclipsed both the 9700 and 8800GTX in 1 key aspect - longevity. 3 years later and the performance #s HD5870 puts out relative to modern high-end cards are still very respectable. I don't think the same could be said for 9700 Pro or 8800 GTX. Yes, you could have played games on 9700Pro and 8800GTX 3 years later but HD5870 allows you to play games at High quality still at 1080P. I think HD5850 is even better since it cost less and came within 5% of 5870 once overclocked.

HD7850 2GB for $185 is faster than a GTX480 and uses 170W less power on average. Not bad progress in 2.5 years.

this is what happens when amd gets their shit straight and nvidia releasing a mid ranged gpu architecture... i really regret getting a 670 cause mine cant overclock worth a damn

I was in a dead spot during the release of the 5870,i had recently sold a rig about the time when the 5870 came out that had a i7 940 and a gtx295 and i was out of the gaming loop for well over a year as i lost interest but i could have seen myself buying a 5870 if i had held on to the gtx280 i purchased before the gtx295.

actually I feel GTX 480 is a good GPU in terms of longevity. The power consumption issue spoiled its reputation. The GTX 580 fixed that issue with changes in transistor design which helped perf/watt. To me HD 5870 was a very conservative design with a clear early time to market goal. Tesselation, compute performance and MSAA performance on deferred rendering engines like FrostBite 2 are weak points of HD 5870.

Look at GTX 480 1920 X 1080 MSAA 4X performance - 36 fps. With a slight overclock you are talking of hitting 40 fps which is enough for a single player game. Not bad for a GPU which is 2.5 years old.

Architecture wise I hold the Fermi architecture (GTX 480 / GTX 580) as the best followed by the Nvidia G80 architecture (8800 GTX)for Nvidia. To me Kepler can be better judged when GK110 arrives. I don't like the compute architecture of GK104. sucks. This from Nvidia who introduced CUDA and that too at a time when GPGPU is really beginning to find its feet.

For AMD I hold the legendary R300 architecture (Radeon 9700 Pro) followed by the GCN architecture as the best. Coincidentally 3 out of those 4 (Fermi, G80, R300) are architectures for new API. I guess it figures that when API transitions happen its easier to start with a clean sheet, take more risks and come out with amazing designs.

Interesting MSAA results, with 4x MSAA, the 680 performs 72% vs no AA, and the 7970 Ghz runs at 76% vs no AA. The reversal has happened in Frostbite 2 where radeons used tank more with MSAA.

Does anyone feel like the game could look much better at 1080p? I mean its not as sharp, sometimes it looks like I'm running at a lower resolution but I'm not.

Has anybody seen the CPU benches? There is an obvious diff btw 2500k and 2600k and btw 2600k and 3930k :)

Yep, frostbite 2 is an amazing engine, excellent scaling with 6+ threads.

I hope they done a better job with MSAA in their engine this time than in BF3 where its effect is minimal.

I think the 670 like the 570 before it cut a few corners in terms of parts and the binning of chips. I never thought Nvidia's second tier offerings stood up as well as AMD's/ATI's over time.
Sell it now and you might still get a decent price for it and buy a 7970GE. In the UK the 670 and 7970GE aren't much different in price and I know which I'd choose.

The charts show HD 7970 Ghz at avg 39 fps and min 35 fps at 2560 x 1600 4X MSAA. So actually a heavily overclocked HD 7970 Ghz (1.25 - 1.3 Ghz) could get close to 45 - 48 fps. Thats not bad. also the min fps on HD 7970 Ghz is 25% higher than GTX 680. thats very good. Looking forward to reviews from other sites too.

Actually a HD 7950 is the card to get now. With the best game bundle in the market and a price of 270 bucks after mail in rebate its an incredibly good deal.

HD 7950 (1.1 Ghz) matches HD 7970 (1.05 Ghz). You can easily hit those speeds with voltage overclocking. I always felt that Nvidia got away with GK104 because AMD's performance was not as good as it should have been for their hardware. With the learning and driver updates AMD has proved that HD 7900 cards are kick ass and superior to Nvidia GTX 680 and GTX 670.

these numbers for the current gen cards look pretty much as one would expect in terms of GPU rankings. it's almost as if they're ranked by price ;)

The 7970 is using less memory than the 680, it always used much more. In Bf3 anyway.

Also... Goooo bulldozer! I can see the 8350 beating the 2500k/3570k in this game. That would be some turn of events.
