Mechanized keyboard key press.

Saga

Banned
Say for example I need to have a key on a keyboard pressed.. oh, every 45 seconds. Just one key. Doesn't have to be anything fancy.

Think the bobber Homer used on his work from home episode to hit the Y key all day for him that led to the plant meltdown.. only my actions won't be causing a meltdown, just automating a server inventory robot without me having to babysit it for 45 minutes every single day at work.

Oh, and mine is completely authorized, but still needs to be non-software based, simply because any non-company software I install on these machines can lead to a possible liability which I do not want to have to spend time defending should something go wrong. (unlikely, but as they say, an ounce of prevention..)

Edit: On an additional note I'd be more than happy to pay for the services of someone who could make this. =)

Sounds like you need to get a company guy to write a 5 minute script.

Sure sounds easy, but pulling resources off for something which I have to spend "just three quarters of an hour" doing would probably be a big no-no around tax time.

Take a cheap rc car motor, mount it to a piston like presser thingy with some legs to attach to the keyboard and a timer.

I've long since been used to it. =P Time management has always been a personal goal, so I always aim to reduce as much time spent on tedious crap as possible. Sitting in a server room with a magazine for almost an hour just to press the Y key every 3-4 minutes REALLY starts to drive one crazy, however.

You've got a couple of options, really.

If you are an ME at heart, you need a solenoid mounted just above the key in question, with a timer to send it pulses.
If you are more of an EE, butchering a cheap USB keyboard is probably the way to go. All you would need is the Y key wired to a transistor on a timer(assuming you can plug in a USB keyboard, this wouldn't work with a KVM console setup).

Unless it was a USB KVM setup.
