a quick tip: if you guys ever get any work done by a general contractor, MAKE sure that even though you have the agreement with the general contractor, you get in writing that the subcontractors have been paid.

recently happened to me. i had a general contractor do some work for me -- and he didn't pay the subcontractor, apparently, and now they have a lien against me. I think this is retarded. If anyone does ANY work on your property, and are not paid in full, they can put a lien on your property, even if you don't have the contract with them directly. In addition, in Texas, if i want to mess with your business, i can merely SAY that you owe me money for XYZ work that I performed on your property, and you didn't pay, and then put a lien on your property -- just like that. Ugh... how stupid is our judicial system!

Jeez, that sucks. Over here in Cali, you have to go through hell to put a lien on someone's property. At least, the way I have to go through it. Dunno about contractors and stuff.

A property lien by Contractors is a very common bit of fine print, even here in California. It is what gives a contractor some recourse to collect from a recalcitrant homeowner.
May I suggest the OP start reading the contracts fully or at least enough to have an understanding of what you are signing?
