Mechanical Keyboard - yes or no?

Ive been a long time user of logitech keyboards (not sure of all models ive used, but im pretty sure ive had the g510, g15?, but im currently using the g110 which is pretty much the same layout as the others without some extra macros and other crap.

Ive heard a lot of good thing about mechanical keyboards, and recently saw a really good deal on the Corsair K70 RGB, and decided to try it out, and if i didnt like it id just return it.

Its a really nice keyboard, and the quality is fantastic, but to be completely honest, I think I might prefer my old g110.

Part of it might be the layout, which seems to be a little different because I keep hitting the wrong keys, but I almost like the feel of my "normal" g110 to it.

Am I crazy for preferring my g110 to this? Or should i keep it and try to get used to it - because maybe its just a matter of getting used to it. It just seems like Mechanical keyboards are very popular right now, and I havent heard ANY bad feedback - seems like everyone thinks mechanical>normal.

Could it be a matter of which one I chose? I chose mx blue because I like the clickyness, but maybe I should have went with reds? I dunno, just seems kinda weird, and distracting when playing games. (on a side note I pretty much only play DOTA right now)

I personally am not a fan of blue switches, I have the K70 RGB with Cherry MX reds and I enjoy it quite a bit, I had cherry MX reds before I got the K70 though so I knew what I was getting with it.

I'd say give it a good week or two of solid use and then try to go back to your old keyboard, if you still prefer it then just return the K70.

Some people just prefer rubber dome keyboards, I personally hate typing on those anymore because I am so used to the mechanical switches at this point. I couldnt go back full time to one.

It's all personal preference. Everyone doesn't drive the same car. Nothing wrong with liking rubber dome keyboards.

I have the Cherry MX Browns on a Stealth keyboard and I love it. I can still use rubber dome keyboards (Natural Key) just fine though. Type just about the same speed on either one. Probably helps that I constantly switch between my Thinkpad, the Stealth, and various Mac (not mine) keyboards all the time. Keeps me flexible.

I prefer blues but then i'm used to typing on a unicomp. My dad has a filco brown and it feels totally different than blues. I don't really like it all that much. Membrane keyboard, forget about it... I couldn't go back to one. It would be torture.

I've tried a couple of modern mechanicals (cherry whatever switches) and they just don't have the "ping" of the old IBM Model Ms.

Anybody make an updated version of those?

I wanted to jump onto the mech keyboard as I like the reviews and I am tempted but
what keep me holding back and holding onto my G15 is that late night typing can keep family members up at night.

Unicomp owns all the designs to buckling springs keyboards. They would have to be the ones to do an updated version if there ever was one. You'll never get that ping feeling from a switch. It's the springs that are creating that effect. That said, I still like blue switches. I bought a filco ninja blue switch and i'm really digging it.

Yeah, I have that exact keyboard. I love it. In ways it's an updated version but in ways it's not. I hear the quality of the unicomps isn't quite as good as the old Model M. The USB and the updated black case, and the addition of a windows key is nice to have though. I've never owned a real model M only a unicomp so I can't tell the exact differences. From what I hear though is that unicomp is skimping on some components in order to save cost.

I have a couple Ms  in the closet with busted keys. D:

$80 for a new one would be worth it if it's actually, you know, as good... :hmm:

You ought to try one and let us know. :) I like mine. I'm probably going to buy another one for another system here shortly.

I go against the grain and actually prefer a good membrane/dome keyboard over mechanical ones.

I acquired my father's barely used Dell SK-8110 keyboard when I disassembled his ancient computer from 10 years ago and replaced it with a laptop. I love it. I love the firm keypress, long key travel, and I like to bottom out the keys when I type. I also like the spacebars better on membrane keyboards... I find on mechanical keyboards the spacebars often have a loud, clunky, inconsistent feel. Not all membrane keyboards have good spacebars and not all mechanical keyboards have less than stellar ones of course.

I still like the cherry MX switch keyboards though particularly if they have rubber washers installed to dampen the noise when bottoming them out.

My least favorite keyboards are chiclet and swissor switch keyboards (besides the silly roll up keyboards that really suck)

Cherry MX browns + rubber o-rings would probably suit you fine.

Is personal preference I guess, I still like the old MS Ergo keyboards.

Yep that, probably on my 4th one, I'm just used to them after decades.

Still have an old Logitech laying about, and others.

I've had browns with the o-rings in the past and find I like the blues just as much if not more... stronger tactile 'bump' .. I suspect I'd like something like a cherry green even more yet. The blue is starting to grow on me a bit more though. If I can train myself to press the keys more lightly and not bottom them out I can see myself getting used to it fast....

Blues have been my favorite up until I tried the romer-g switches on the logitech g910. The new key tops and the short throw switches are now my favorite making it easier to type with less fatigue.

If you're going to go with a mechanical keyboard, why not go straight to the top?

IBM Model M for life....

(Love my 1991 PS/2 Model M.I've had it since August of 2007.Still clicking happily away after nearly 8 years of daily use.)

I actually own 3 Model M keyboards.(2 1991 vintage,and a 1995.)

The 2 1991 keyboards are hooked up to my 2 desktop computers, and I keep the 1995 keyboard around as a spare.

Has anyone had any experience with the Cougar Attack mechanical keyboard? I'm thinking of getting one of them.

Im not a fan of those keycaps personally, but it uses Cherry MX switches so it will be good, and you can always change the keycaps later if you really wanted.
