LOVES PARK — Police evacuated businesses and homes near a North Second Street auto service shop this morning after employees there found a pipe bomb strapped inside the tailpipe of a vehicle.

A vehicle came in for routine work at F&F Tire World, 5302 N. Second St., and a mechanic immediately noticed something out of the ordinary.

“We put it on the lift and found a little pipe strapped to the exhaust,” mechanic Andrew Mandujano said.

Workers took the bomb off the vehicle and placed it in a bucket before calling police.

Members of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad detonated the device about 10 a.m. Loves Park Deputy Chief Rodney Scott said police analyzed the bomb before the detonation to determine how it was made.

The 5300 block of North Second Street was blocked off for several hours as police and investigators with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives searched the scene.

Scott said no charges have been filed and no suspects have been arrested. The incident remains under investigation.

weird.

If it was the car owners, why hide it in a tail pipe that gets hot?

If it was meant to blow up the car owner, why didn't it work?

I would hate to deliver that news to the driver when they came back to the shop. Having been the victim of a pipe bomb incident I can tell you it's very sobering.

When I lived just north of Detroit (Mt. Clemens) back in 1993, Wisconsin (where I'm from) had just beaten Michigan 13-10 at Camp Randall Stadium. I still had my Wisconsin license plate and I was living in an apartment complex. At about 3am I hear a very loud bang. About 15 minutes later my roommate comes in saying there is a police officer at the door. The police officer asks if I was the owner of a 1992 Toyota Celica with a Wisconsin license plate. I nod my head to which he regrets to inform me that my car was blown up by a pipe bomb.

They never found out who did it.

Yup. Detroit and the metro area really is a shithole.

There are many types of explosives that can be detonated by just the heat of the exhaust. A normal Catalytic Converter operates at between 1200 to 1600 degrees. That is more than sufficient to start the detonation of many explosives. The pipe bomb in the picture if filled with the right explosive could easily take out the vehicle. Also it places the explosion at a place hopefully far away. Actually there was an episode of CSI that covered this. Probably where this fellow got the idea. I had always thought that they show too much on these TV shows.

Damn those workers have some balls taking it out and putting it in a bucket lol. Soon as I saw it, police would be called.

Until you pulled it out, you wouldn't have known what it was.

Well story says it was strapped to the tailpipe, from pic looks like just strapped on with metal wire. Not really concealed. If I saw that know I wouldn't be messing with it.

Edit: Actually story conflicts from reporter to mechanics statement.

Considering that in most vehicles the fuel tank is in the same general area...yeah that would pretty much take out the entire vehicle most likely.

We used to make bombs similar to those (threaded pipe filled with just common match heads).

They are extremely powerful. One of the guys blew off most of his hand making one on day...it blew up through the roof of his garage...they found fingers blocks away.

Seriously.

I know sometimes people think all the actions involved for "potential bombs" is beyond insanity, but it really is a good idea to treat anything unknown that resembles a potential bomb very very seriously.

If you see an unknown object tied to a vehicle somewhere, with wires of unknown purpose... you should immediately suspect potential hazard. And then immediately report the situation, and never personally touch said device. Sometimes these things are so shoddily put together that while it survived the rough roads, it may be wired strangely, or may be designed to detonate upon removal if not done a specific way. Amateurs rarely make them in such a way, but it is possible.

How is one going to put a pipe bomb inside the exhaust pipe and no one notice something?
The effect of increasing the backpressure of the exhaust would be noticable to a driver.

Now strapping the bomb to the exhaust is a different thing.

Depending on the force; it could rip open the fuel tank and cause a then serious secondary explosion.

The news story is very poorly written. If the pipe bomb is INSIDE the exhaust, how is it going to be seen without removing the exhaust system? What would it be strapped to? (not much inside a pipe for attachment points)

I suspect it was attached to the outside of the exhaust pipe/system...not on the inside.

It would surprise the average person how easy it is to build a simple bomb that can do a LOT of damage. Not exactly TNT quality...but when properly placed...the end result is about the same.

I wonder who the guy pissed off?

You know, if a car is acting strangely, most people will take said vehicle to a garage to have a mechanic look at it. My educated guess says that the back pressure caused by the bomb in the tailpipe is why the owner took the car to the mechanic.

Well, if it happened to also rupture the gas tank when it blew up....

Reminds me of an old joke, where the Polish terrorist got caught after someone told him to go blow up a car, and he burned his lips on the hot tail pipe! o_O  :sneaky:
