Measuring for a fan

Is the fans measurments...like when someone says a 180mm fan is that the diameter? I want to measure here for my friends case to get him a fan.

Yeah thats the diameter across from tip to tip of the fan blades. They'll be a little wider though due to the housing around the fan.

Ok so I have a spot in my case for a fan in the lower front section...the manufacturer has drilled holes and has it all ready for the user to put the fan in. So how do I go about measuring to get the right size? Measure via the mounting holes...or the vent holes (cause those will equal most likely to the fan blades) ?

I politely differ with Jumpem.
Go to the Panasonic.com/industrial website and look at the Panaflo series of fans; the measurement (that everyone calls the fans by) is along one flat side of the fan. {NOT the diameter of the fan blades or housing}

When I was a newbie (about 2 years ago) I had a lot of trouble getting someone to help me with the exact questions that you have posed.

To measure for an existing 'punch-out' in a case I had to measure the mounting holes from a variety of different size fans.

60mm fans measure mounting hole to mounting hole 71mm DIAGONALLY [2 3/4"]
80mm fans measure 101mm DIAGONALLY [4"]
120mm fans measure 148mm DIAGONALLY [5 7/8"]

Yea as soon as I gather up some money, so it will not go on the CC and annoy the wife. I also like the cases at 2 Geeks
But ultimately I am going for the Coolermaster Case...I love it, ever since I saw it at the Computer Show.

Easiest way to make a cutout for a 120mm case fan - use an AOL CD as the cutout template, and cut INSIDE the line.
