measure depth before drilling

is there anything that measures a thickness of a wall before i start drilling a hole?
i wanna run a ethernet cable to the other room instead of running it around the rooms.

If you're reunning cable through the wall, who cares how thick it is, you have to drill all the way trough anyway. But, unless you live in a house built abnormally, it has 2x4s as studs (2x6s in rare cases). Plus it has 1/2" or 3/4" drywall on either side. So... 3.5" + 1/2" + 1/2" = 4.5". Or if you have thick drywall, then it's 5".

Or, just drill a small hole all the way through and measure if with wire or something. THen putty the hole back up.

heres the whole story. 🙂

i live in an apt n wanna share net, cable tv n phone with the girl next door. she lives in her own apt.
theres already a line running from my apt into her apt for internet. the line is very visible from outside.
BUT my other friend said doing something like what im thinking of is highly illegal!! is it? how is it illegal when we're consenting?

so im thinking then... lets just drill straight through the wall. i cant tell how thick it is. if its not thick, then i'll apply putty when its time to move.

Almost certainly violates the TOS for the net connection. Charter Cable, frex, specifically forbids this.

its illegal because you cant share your stuff like that to another residence, otherwise one person in a neighborhood would get cable, then just loop it along everyhouse and the cable co gets screwed out of alot of money...

wall thickness has nothing to do with drilling a hole all the way through it, just drill it, put in your wire, and be done
