<< Gat is short for Gatling gun. >>

Naw. It's just a slang term for guns. Started in the 40s and was popular for a while in rap music

actually, Gat IS short for gatling gun. Just because some rapper decided to use it as a generic term for guns doesnt make it so :)

It may be short for gattling gun in some cases, but MANY rappers, especially in the early 90s used it as slang. It was also popular in alot of gangster movies in the 30s and 40s.
I don't think the guys in POD are talking about gattling guns

Here is a quote excerpted from this article

<< "Youth of the Nation," a powerful number written the day of the Santana High School shootings in the band's hometown of San Diego earlier this year, is scheduled to hit radio and video outlets next month, according to Atlantic Records. The track includes the verse, "Maybe this kid was reaching out for love/ Or maybe for a moment/ He forgot who he was/ Or maybe this kid just wanted to be hugged" (see "P.O.D. Launch Satellite, Address School Violence"). The song's chorus is chanted by a group of high school students. >>

Let's do a bit harder one next, this is from Therion's Cults of the Shadow:

Erset la tari-utu-kam
Adapa baru sar kissati
Ziqqurrat kutha pet pi girru
Erset la tari-utu-kam

Ludoul bel nimequi ea
Naramtu dianau apsu

Anyone can translate that? :)

Very true. Since today is NOT 1930 or 1940, we can assume that when people are talking about "gats" nowadays, they are referring to guns, in general. In fact, in the majority of "gat" use today, it really means a smaller firearm, like a pistol. Bigger guns have nicks of their own, like a shotgun (called a "shottie") or Uzis/small sub-machine guns (burners) Pistols are also called "heaters", as in:

"Stashed in my dash, holds two heaters
BLA-KOW! Put holes through beaters"

Translated:

In the dash of my motor vehicle, which holds two small pistols
*dramatic loud noise!* Critically wounding my enemies/ppl I don't like.

Any questions? This has been your ghetto slang lesson for the day, brought to you by the letters "G", "A", and "T", and by the number "40" :D

FYI actually the shotgun's nickname is the "bitch":)
But "shottie" sounds okay, I'm gonna shoot you with my "shottie"

I've actually never heard "bitch" used as ghetto slang for the shotgun...shottie is often used, much like this:

My block's hot, you try to run game, I end your fame
Pull the shottie, two shots to the body, put out your flame
What's my name? I be's number one, but call me Xero
Run that lip, call me Subway Jared, eat you like hero

Translation:

My section of city street is laden with much gang activity, controlled by me; therefore if you were to attempt to try to wrest control from me, I'd be forced to kill you. Drawing my shotgun, I'd fire on you twice, and immediately end your life. What am I called? Ironically, even thought my street position is Number One, my nickname is Xero (a homonym with "0"). If you keep talking back, I will be similar to Jared of Subway fame, and eat you like his hero sandwiches.

I have however heard "bitchstick" or "boomstick" used in CS before...but CS is NOT quite as gangsta as Bed-Suty, Brooklyn :D
