Do people say that because they are afraid to admit they
don't give it their all normally ...

so they just make up an impossible percentage ?

It means they tried really hard.

I think it is a reference to the idea that you can go beyond your physical limitations by sheer force of will. Your body tops out at 100% but your will and desire can supposedly push it farther.

100% is the limit for a person's body so to give 100% of yourself means dying. 110% means you throw some eggs and sperms into the mix

Giving 110% simply means you go beyond what is expected of you to do an exemplary job...

That's the whole point of the phrase. Go all the way, do the impossible.

Yes, that is the meaning of the phrase, but it's wrong. It's impossible to give more than 100%. If you do give more, you're still giving 100%.

I get the phrase, I'm just saying, logically, it doesn't make sense.

In Sega EA golf, you could give 110% power on your swings but you had to work extra hard to stay accurate!

So it means working extra hard to get a little better results than normal!

What if you are really really fat?

You can still only give 100%.

What if you are pregnant?

You're still only giving 100%.

What if I gave you 100 dollars in ones, then when you counted it right after I gave it to you, you counted 110 dollars?

I think your giving 110% effort in looking to much into the phrase and taking it wayyyyyyyyyyy to literal. Way to go above and beyond the call!

One time I went the extra mile and gave 110%, giving all I've got and then some pushing myself beyond the limits for that extra effort.

I'll never do that again.

It means you need to spend half an hour making a powerpoint presentation and the rest of the day playing on the internet.
