Meal Replacement Protein Drinks?

I know they're are probably better forums for this kind of stuff but I wanted to see what y'all thought.

As the topic says, I want to try these drinks out - essentially replace breakfast and lunch (yes - I saw ac slater on nip/tuck) and have a light dinner. I already go to the gym (lift and cardio) but I'm not seeing any results. I'm really trying to lose body fat and I figured it was my diet.

So I've been drinking some of this Muscle Milk, Lean Muscle Ready To Drink Stuff - it tastes pretty good but before committing to a vat of powder I wanted to know some other thoughts. I've also heard good things about myoplex but there's so many different kinds.

Any help is appreciated!
 
You need to give more details. How tall/weight. In just about every case an individual will gain weight, and some fat in the process of building bigger muscles. If you were trying to loose weight all you have to do is eat low carb meals, and healthy and go running. you'll loose weight guaranteed. If you are trying to build muscle you need to be doing the opposite, eating bigger meals, still cardio, but not too much. If you are hitting the gym at least 3x a week, and dont see bodily improvements, its more than likely your diet is at fault.
 
I'm about 5"7 and 155lbs - a year ago I was 140. Eating "right" is the problem - I've been eating out too much. I figured these "lean muscle" protein drinks would help.

Smaller meals (with protein), 6x/day. 😉
 
Typically you either have a protein shake or a meal replacement shake. I don't like either b/c the protein shake won't replace a meal and the meal replacement shakes you buy are usually a bunch of cheap/bad carbs (like maltodextrin or something)

My own personal meal replacement shake

1 cup skim milk
1 cup water
1 scoop protein powder (I use Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey)
1/4-1/2 cup oatmeal
1/3-1/2 tablespoon flaxseed oil (or a couple capsules of fish oil)
optional: eat 1/2 or a whole banana

Roughly
250-300 calories
33g protein
good carbs from the oatmeal
good fats from flaxseed/fish oil

Oh, and like CadetLee said, smaller meals more often

My wife and her friends all jumped on to the Herbalife protein shake diet for a couple of months despite my light ridicule. My wife had a baby in February and is still about 15lbs heavier than before pregnant. One of her friends is probably pushing 6'0" and 200lbs (she's a big woman).

The friend lost like 20lbs in 6 weeks drinking these things for breakfast and lunch. My wife lost about 9lbs. They both stopped after about 6 weeks and they both gained about a third back.

It's hard to say that it was something in the drink rather than the fact that they were drinking a specific amount for two of their daily meals. My wife's friend would also get very, very hungry by dinner time and finds the whole experience to be unpleasant even with a mid-afternoon snack.


I'm here to say that I think Herbalife shakes are a waste of money. They cost a lot even if you buy them on Ebay or something. But I tried them and they do taste great! I don't have a lot to compare them to, though. The only other protein shake I've had if the one they sell at Costco, and it has a funny sweatener taste that I really don't like. If the Herbalife stuff tastes like a 10, I'd say that the Costco stuff tastes like a 3.

I'm interested in what others might say about how other products taste. A lot of people seem pretty excited about the Optimum Nutrition products, and I wonder if they taste better than the Costco stuff.

Also, the ON stuff is specifically labeled as "not meant as a weight loss or meal replacement option" or something like that. I wonder why it says that on the packaging??

It's only a whey protein not a MRP, so it doesn't have any carbs or calories or fats needed.

EAS is good but expensive, and it has maltodextrin, so a homemade one would be better, and do not get a MRM mixed up with a weight gainer.

It's only a whey protein not a MRP, so it doesn't have any carbs or calories or fats needed.

EAS is good but expensive, and it has maltodextrin, so a homemade one would be better, and do not get a MRM mixed up with a weight gainer.

Unless you want to GAIN weight (if you're a stick with bones)! :laugh: I love ON, but I don't replace meals with them, I supplement the meals with them. MRM = meal replacement. Whey protein = dietary supplement, big difference.
