ME trouble. HELP please!

My buddy has ME on his Compaq. He D/l IE 6 but there was a problem. Now when you go booth the computer, it says their is a problem with Eplorer.exe, then it says, .DLL file is missing C: windows/system/shlwapi.dll file can not be found. He never backed up his computer and has some files he is trying to save. Unfortunately,m the Compaq only comes with a restore disk, not the ME oS disk. The only version I have is a DELL ME disk but it will not load saying this is not the correct version for this computer. IS there any way I can fix this without wiping everything out and starting from scratch?

there are many ways, I would say the easiest way is to pop the HDD from his compaq in your computer (or another computer) and copy off the files he needs... Then put it back in the system and use the restore disk. Or take this opportunity to upgrade from that ass monkey OS to win2k or XP. Then after reinstallation put the HDD back in your system and copy his files back.... or in the mean time U could have burned them to CD, or whatever...

suggest that he try the IE repair option first.
go to add|remove programs in control panel, highlight IE6 then hit remove.
a new dialogue box will appear with the options of repair or revert back to previous IE version.

The computer wouldn't even boot. I figured it out tho. Used the EXT command in dos to copy the cab files from the CD to HD, then once it booted, I was able to restore it and add all the current updates. ME blows, Glad I dual boot 98se/2k Pro.
