So, my boss is in our LA office this week, helping set up for an expansion, as well as helping upgrade the 20 or so users there to SP2. They forgot to copy to the LA server / take a copy of some software down with them. There were some minor network issues that were being troubleshot/shooted at the time of the call, so he asked that I burn the software and overnight it to him so that he'd get it today. I said no problem.

Later in the day, I was able to copy the software over, so I did not send the disc(s). Last night, I shot him an email that said:

I was unable to get the discs out. The copy has been going for several hours, but it's only about a third of the way through.

Then I did a bunch of "enters" and put at the bottom:

Just kidding. All the software is at (insert path). Try not to get too loaded tonight.

Well, apparently he didn't see the bottom. I got a call this morning when he got in the office. He was pissed. I was so surprised by the call, I didn't know what to say. After the call, I sent him an email, better putting to words what went down:

Again, I give my apologies on this. I made the decision after I knew the first [software] copied over without problems. The Fedex delivery has been anything but consistent when I?ve shipped stuff down there, as I mentioned when we spoke yesterday. I knew there was a good chance it wouldn?t get there till close to mid-day, and knew this was the surest way to get it to you in time for a full day.

He has not yet responded.

We have a very fun, casual work environment within our group. We frequently crack jokes on eachother and have as much fun as we can within our group.

I am/was being considered for a (small) promotion, as is a co-worker. I have about a years time put in on him, have a much broader understanding of everything going on, and have built up a much broader rep with more employees (including the big wigs). However, at this point, I'm seriously considering pulling my name from the hat all together. I really don't know that I'd get it, and I think if I force them to choose, it will create an undesirable "feeling" amongst our team.

What a sh1tty way to start the day.

* I made the decision AFTER I knew everything would work fine, and BEFORE our Fedex pickup deadline. Had it not worked, I would've shipped the disc(s).

** Simply because they were not needed.
 
I wouldn't worry about it. Everything been's transferred over the network, and it's assumed that a disc copy was only needed because of the earlier network issues? He's got everything he needs 2-3 hours before even the Fedex Priority Overnight package likely would arrive.

I would have still sent the dics over night just as extra insurance. Nothing worse than going to a different job site only to find out you don't have what you need.

How could you know that? You said they were having network issues....maybe they would prevent or limit access to those files on the network.

When we spoke this morning, he said he was glad it worked out. But he was really pissed last night when he got my email apparently.

I forgot that he would most likely be reading the email on his Blackberry, and as such, it would take a lot of scrolling to get through the return lines 😱

True, it would not have hurt. In hindsight, yes, it would have been better to have them but not need them.

The network issue(s) had to do with slowness between our Seattle office and the LA office. So the concern was with how long it would take for it to copy. The mid-sized "package" of about 140mb took < 10 minutes to copy and not the 90+ we originally thought. The largest package was just shy of 400mb. All in all, it took < 2 hours to complete.

He responded to my follow up email. He's upset that I didn't let him know sooner / my lack of communication to him.

I mentioned the the things I have over my co-worker. However his plusses are:

- While not perfect, he has been here less time than me, and as such has had less opportunity to mess up.
- He had done a really good job with his SP2 deployment project, and continues to do so.

The combination of him currently being on the "good side" and me on the bad makes it a great opportunity for him. Especially since we're supposed to interview next week.
 
Don't withdraw from consideration for the promotion. He'll probably cool off.

But the lesson is that screwing around can backfire when you don't expect it. And when that happens, no one will just say "Oh, we joke around all the time." All that will matter is that it backfired, and therefore it makes you look stupid. Trust me on this. I can practically guarantee your boss, while happy everything worked out, is thinking, "codeyf went too far." Why? Because you aggravated the hell out of him and bosses don't like that.

I joke around at work all the time, with my boss and with co-workers, but not when the subject matter is the actual work. That's where I draw the line, and it's worked well for me.
