Yes, some of you have replied to my other threads about sharing dialup. Yeah.. I gave up on that :p

I recently just got Verizon DSL service, and I was wondering how I could share it between my two computers.

Equipment:
8-port Ethernet hub w/ 8 incoming and 1 outgoing ports (outgoing and incoming8 are shared)
2 computers with 10/100 NICs and USB ports (duh)
Westell dual-connect DSL modem (RJ-45 and USB)
Plenty of wiring

Questions:
1.) How do I set up the wiring to share it?
2.) Software setup? The DSL connection connects through Local Area Connection, so I can't setup a static IP - I'm going to check through the Verizon software again after I post this message to see if it will give me an option to set it up differently. If it does, I'll repost.
3.) Would there be any noticable bandwidth difference if I setup the modem to my main PC through the USB instead of Ethernet? I'm thinking along the lines of the data thoroughput of the different types of ports.

Step One: Read this.

Link to: AnandTech - FAQ. Basic Options for Internet Connection Sharing

Link to: AnandTech - FAQ. Hubs, routers, switches, DSL, LANs, WANs...?

Ignore the prices in the links above. The same or similar hardware can be found for 60%-90% less.

Step two: Buy the product at the top ($16.99) and attached your Hub to it.

Link to: Siemens Speed Stream 2602 2-Port DSL/Cable Router.

For few $$$ more you can get 4 ports and a Printer server, and for about $30 you go Wireless.

Or take it your way and the Highway, via USB.

Hm, not a bad combo. Can't quite afford the wireless solution (although I'd like to because the other computer will eventually be moved into another room), but the 4-port w/printer server isn't a bad price. Is Siemens a good brand for routers? It's not going to crap out on me 2 weeks after I buy it, will it?

ARGHHHHH!!! Just recieved the aforementioned router (the slightly more expensive 4-port w/ printer server), and it's having issues too. Here's a copy/paste of what I sent to tech support, but we all know how slow those types of people can be. Maybe (hopefully) you guys can help me out faster.

I recently recieved a Siemens SpeedStream SS2604 router. I've connected all the cables correctly, but the red status indicator and the green "Print Act" indicator won't stop flashing.

Just to be sure, this is how the wiring is set up:

Router<--->PC1
/\ /\
| |
| ----->PC2
|
|______>DSL Modem

All cabling is standard LAN cable (not crossover). PC1 is plugged into the LAN1 port. PC2 is plugged into the LAN2 port. The DSL modem is plugged into the WAN port, although I have also tried the other LAN ports.

None of the troubleshooting information either online nor in the manual even related to my problem. I hope I don't have a faulty router, because the lights continue to flash even when nothing is connected (nothing except the power cable).

Did you insert the ID and Password to the Router's PPPOE Menu.

I can't even access the router. It's not getting passed the initialization. The configuration is supposed to be on 192.168.254.254, but typing that into IE doesn't reach it, nor does ping/tracert. It's just not finding it (on either computer)

Your computer's IP is probaly on another IP band.

If your Router access IP is 192.168.254.254 configure one computer to static IP 192.168.254.10 and try again.

Once you are in you change it to other bands and initiate the PPPOE.

Well the lights continue to flash even when nothing else is plugged in - I don't think it would be an issue of having incompatible IP addresses (they're set to obtain automatically). The manual says if the red status indicator continues to flash, it's a hardware problem, but I haven't a clue what the hardware problem could be if nothing else is plugged in other than the power cord!
