Can anyone recommend a good (free?) MD5 checksum tool that can create a MD5 checksum for a large folder with hundreds/thousands of files and subfolders (e.g. a folder with 60GB of word docs, PDF files, etc in various sub-folders)?
All I can find are tools that generate individual file MD5 hashes, which doesn't help me as I need to compare and verify some very large folders between computers.

HashCheck does exactly this.

It's also highly optimized for super-large data sets. I use it extensively to create and verify checksum manifests (*.md5, *.sfv or *.sha1 files), and there are cases where I'm dealing with millions of files with terabytes of data (like when I did a md5-snapshot of my file server's entire directory tree for a before-and-after sanity check when I mass-migrated all the data to a new set of hard drives last year).
