For those of you who have one or more of those certifications, did you guys take a class or just went with the books then took the exams?

I've been working in IT for about 5 years. I've set up basic WANs, LANs, wireless networks, etc. How much preparation time do you think I would need to pass the CCNA or MCSE test? I know the CCIE is much harder.

Your thoughts? Links to resources/recommendation for prep books?

As always you guys rock!

Btw, I've searched the networking forum but couldn't find any info on this. Thanks in advance.

I took a CCNA prep class before I got my CCNA, it was just so-so.

I'm currently studying for my CCNP now, solo.

EDIT: Cisco Press self-study guides are great. They are always my main source of information.

EDIT2: If you really want some good info on preparing for an exam, I recommend visiting www.techexams.net. Great forums, really helpful people. They can answer any question you have about any certification.

CCIE is VERY difficult to get. It's a long process (lots of hands on experience).

If you get it, you'll get immediate employment (Cisco, etc) with a salary in the six figures. They are the Gods of the networking world.

CCNA is a waste. Pretty easy to obtain and, aside from getting your foot in the door at the bottom, unimpressive in networking circles (or so my wife tells me).

That is not at all true for most cities which have a lot of networking (Seattle, most of CA, etc)

And anyone who says its "easy to obtain" knows nothing about networking.
