I am pretty familiar with the A+ certification but someone mentioned Microsoft's MCP cert. Are any of these worth getting to help with getting a job or something. I need a decent job while in college.

Sure, they look great on your resume - but the way they hand out these certs now days, they are becoming more of a joke.

If you're trying for an entry level position cold (you've go nobody on the inside to recommend you), the A+, etc. might mean your resume avoids the circular file long enough for them to call you for an interview.

Yeah, the A+ and the Net+ are good entry level certs.

I would only go for an MCP if you want to be working with windows, but an MCP on its own isnt worth much. I would at least shoot for the MCSA (for MCP's 2k Proffesional, 2k Server, Network Infrastructure(I think), and for the last you can use the combination of the A+ and Net+ to count as one qualification on the MCSA path)

Those Cert don?t mean much except for Oracle Certs. You might want to try C++, Java & then get them Certs.

A+ is next to useless.

An MCP is slightly more valued, especially if it specifically complements a skill/area that the job you are applying for requires.

Besides that though, they are just fluff that you can throw on a resume. Any halfway skilled technical interviewer can see right through a paper cert holder.

they don't actually mean anything, but it's better than saying "i know alot about computers"

i did both of those, i think they helped a little with me getting two jobs, the A+ with getting my first job with the company i am with in 1998
and MCP for Windows 98 in 2000 getting the promotion/position i am in now at the company

they help round out a resume, they don't make the resume, IMO
