I don't blame the kids. they wrote somehting and teh people are makeing money off it. Whey should they?

I sure in the hell wouldnt want the service to make anything off what i did without giving me a cut.

You post on Anandtech. Anandtech has a clause in their T&C that is very similar to the one Turnitin.com uses:
"All comments and materials submitted to the Forums shall be considered non-confidential and the property of Anandtech, unless otherwise agreed in advance in writing by Anandtech."

Anandtech has ads on the forums. Anandtech is generating revenue when you and I and everyone else post here, and others come to read partake in our infinite wisdom and sometimes poor spelling.

If you don't want Anandtech to make money off what you post, your only option is to stop posting. Same deal with these kids. Their only option is to not use the site.

There is a huge diffrence.

if i told ATOT to not use my post to make money they would just flat out ban me.

the kids turned it in (one sight said they had to turn it in for grades none of the others say it though) saying they did not want it archieved. so turn it in should not have used it.

The service seeks to root out cheaters by comparing student term papers and essays against a database of more than 22 million student papers as well as online sources and electronic archives of journals. In the process, the student papers are added to the database.

And what are the chances that in a sample of 22 million papers, two papers on the same subject will appear similar??

No, there really isn't a big difference. In both cases you have two options - don't use the service, or use it on their terms. The user can't change the terms of use of the service. That's absurd.

Based on what other people have posted in other threads on this subject, the service gives the teacher the similar passage in the other paper so it can be evaluated. If it's clear that it's a coincidence, then there's no problem for the student.
