McLaren are at it again - to build McLaren F1 follow-up!

The source for this is AtlasF1 - a Formula One subscription website I frequent. This time around, McLaren are teaming up with Mercedes. The new car will retail for UK250,000 and sport a 5.5 L supercharged V8 boasting 544 horsepower. It is expected to incorporate a slew of "Formula One features" and will go on sale in 2003!

UPDATE: There is a picture of an automobile alongside the article but I'm not sure if this is it or not. It looks like a Mercedes except there is a distinct hint of a Formula One McLaren nose section and aggressive horizontal air intakes to either side of this nose section.

Oh yeah...top speed is more than 200 mph. As for them not partnering with BMW, that's because McLaren is currently partnering with Mercedes in F1 whereas BMW is partnering with Williams.

From the sounds of it, this will be no follow up to the F1. Frankly, there will never be a follow up to the F1. That car was a work of absolute beauty, and the technology and effort put into building them will forever be unsurpassed.

BTW, I'm not registering just to read an article. Can you do us a favor and copy/paste the text into the thread?

While I agree with you about the beauty and technology of the car, Forever is a long time man. I bet someday there will be a better car.

Actually, prodution on the McLaren-BMW F1 was cut short because of Mercedes' complaints. Mercedes and McLaren were already working together when McLaren approached BMW for the engine, and Mercedes was not pleased.

Edit: Hehe...this comes from McLaren's Official Web Site...

Production of the McLaren F1 drew to a close in May 1998, with a total production of 100 cars, made up as follows:

F1: 64
F1 LM: 5
F1 GT: 3
GTR 95: 9
GTR 96: 9
GTR 97: 10

For the F1, it requires a few moments thought to come to terms with the fact that only 64 of these exquisite cars will ever exist. Their rarity is guaranteed, and consequently, their value is likely to increase with time.

Most of the existing owners intend to keep their cars for their lifetime - some even intend to pass them on to their own children. But ,just occasionally, an F1 becomes available through McLarens facilitation service, which helps to place existing F1's with new owners.

Having secured an F1, the new owner would then expect McLaren to rebuild the car to his own specification. This would include a seat fitting to ensure that all the controls are perfectly positioned, plus any combination of repainting, retrimming and options that he requires.

Serious enquiries from customers who wish to add an F1 to their collection, or to race an F1 GTR, should be made to Harold Dermott, initially by fax on +44 1483 740500.

Did you know that McLaren also makes high-end audio equipment?

Ok, I can agree with that. Perhaps I'm a little close-minded. I just have a hard time seeing production car outperforming the F1, either in straight line acceleration or corning. The Bugatti Veryon has some serious potential in pure performance, but its aerodynamics seem to be lacking - which may hamper its high speed handling. 1001 bhp with an awd train would make for some fun launches off the line. :)

Forced induction with less power than the naturally aspirated and this is supposed to be a follow up?

The cylinders don't make a big diff, it's the displacement, it is weird they are only getting 544HP out of a SC'd 5.5 liter tho, We are getting over 600 on the 5.8 sportsman block with the largest pulley available on the D-1, Imagine when we bolt on a small pulley :D

I'd cut and paste the article if I hadn't already summarized about everything it said. There's really not much in there that's interesting except the picture but I swear I've seen that car somewhere else and it's not the McLaren car.

All I know is that if Adrian Newey had a hand in designing this car, expect it to be quite the performer regardless of the unimpressive engine. The past several years the only way to beat Michael Schumacher in F1 has been to get Adrian Newey to design the car. And it's worked. He produced Damon Hill '96, Jacques Villeneuve '97, and Mika Hakinnen '98 & '99 world champions:)

You mean the SLR? Yah that thing is no McLaren F1. It's actually a project undertaken by McLaren just because they are partners in Formula One...and Mercedes own like 30% of McLaren now or something like that.

The coming F60 will out the McLaren F1, heck I felt the F50 was already a better supercar than the F1(i am no tifosi).

<sigh>Looks like this is all it is:| The article made no mention of the name of the car which is unusual given the SLR name has been floating around for a while. Oh well, the SLR will be built in Portsmouth, England at a new McLaren production facility.

I am!!! F40 forever. That was one badass car. Anyways, the SLR looks like a McLaren F1 for snobs. The F60 will probably look more functional than stylish due to the beating they got when the F50 came out.

How about I just post the Mercedes-Benz official pictures (now that I know the damn name of the car...what a crappy article!;)) Pics. Unless you have something going for David Coulthard and Mika Hakinnen who are standing to either side of the car in the article's picture, I think the official pics are better!

I still have the video of that dude test driving the F1, I love to watch it and see his reactions, hooting and hollering, hearing that engine scream, in one turn the rear starts to slide out and he punches it and drives out of it like nothing :D , an awesome video to be sure :D

The SLR has that horrible nose which was supposedly inspired from the MP4-13 and the MP4-14...the championship winning cars. Yah ok...it looks fugly. I saw that thing at a carshow and it looks just like a Mercedes. Big, slow, and expensive.

Same here...the only thing bad about the video is the version I have can't fast forward or rewind! Tiff Needel (the guy in the video) is apparently in negotiations to commentate F1 for the ITV feed now that they don't have Murray Walker.

I still can't believe Ron Dennis smashed up his own car...how pitiful..what a waste of an F1!

OK so I wasn't just seeing things...a F1-style nose section is somewhere in that car. I wonder if the F60 will have Ferrari's new engine with the transmission built into the actual engine...we get to see that in Formula One next year:)
