MCE and burning to DVD . . .

XMan

Lifer
If I record a TV show on MCE 2K5, can I burn it to a DVD that will be in a data format compatible with most players? I've heard this some sort of protection, but that sometimes it doesn't apply, and sometimes it does . . . ?

Some premium channels use copy protection (CGMS-A) to block some recorded shows/movies from being burned to DVD. This can be worked around using certain inline video "enhancers" on the cable coming into your tuner card. If you have the Sonic Encoders, you can burn regular video dvds...it looks like the next update for MCE will include them as well, so no need to pirate them (the only way to get them if you didn't buy a pre-built MCE box or get the 3 disc OEM set) if you don't. Otherwise, you can use one of many plugins to strip the dvr-ms security wrapper and be left with a plain mpeg file which you can use the program of your choice to burn to dvd (video or data).

Ah, okay. I don't have premium channels, just enhanced basic cable, so sounds like I should be fine then. 🙂

Where do you get the 3 disk OEM set? The one Newegg sells, for example, is only two disks.

I'm not sure...my Action Pack copy of MCE was only 2 disks as well. I think maybe the MSDN version has the 3rd disk as well as a version they release to major OEMs. It's really annoying that they don't make sonicencoders.msi available to everyone at the moment, although from my snooping through an early release of the upcoming update (emerald), there are references to sonicencoders in some of the inf's, so I think it will be included for all soon.

If you don't already know, The Green Button Forums are a great MCE resource.

The 3 disk OEM is actually a 3 pack (not 3 disc) and Newegg does have it Link you can see the multimedia feature pack in the photo

Ah yes...that's it.

Makes even less sense! 😕

It makes no sense. Not shipping the Feature Pack with a single OEM OS is beyond me. Seems like a basic function of the Media OS to burn DVD's, why is it a "special" privledge for the builder that buys 3 copies at once? Seems like you've paid for whether you buy 1 or 3 copies, it certainly couldn't be space constraints.

I was even more disappointed it wasn't shipped with my Action Pack subscription either, I thought for sure it would be in there...but no.

Here's to hoping it's included with Emerald, although it looks like my hopes of QAM support are being dashed. 🙁

I'd even settle for mixing analog tuners and STB, but overall I remain very impressed with MCE 2005, using 2 MCE rigs for nearly a year now.

Another reason why I use MEEDIO and BEYOND TV together.
No issues and lots more flexibility.... and the tons of plugins make it even better.
Also, MEEDIO TV now supports the ability to record HDTV content as well. Another feather in the hat compared to MCE.

The constraints of MCE just bugged the hell out of me.

Good luck....

MCE constrainst are overrated, and its stability is underrated. Beyond3D and Meedio are definately good packages however.

What's to stop me from using a third-party application, say, Nero, or Roxio, to burn to DVD, then? Is there some sort of advantage other than it being seamless within the interface with the Sonic code?

I could buy the three pack, but it's against OEM regs to break it up and sell the other two, isn't it?

Nothing to stop you, I think there are a few Editors/encoders that import DVR-MS directly now, or you can strip the MPEG from the ASF wrapper and import it into any encoder that supports MPEG2.

Seems like selling OEM software w/qualifying hardware is legit.

Looks like getting the files to enable to Sonic Encoders is pretty simple . . . I may just go that way.
