mce 2005 vs vista prem.

I have mce 2005 and vista premium
so I guess it's time to update my htpc
is vista prem ok for htpc setups?
or should I just stick to mce because of the low specs?

specs of my old pc

pentium m 1.7
320 gb hds
gf 6200 256mb
1.5 gig mem
pvr 150

Vista should be fine on that computer, but if you plan on doing any HDTV with something like HDHomeRun, the CPU might not have enough power.

If you've already bought it and have nothing else to install it on, then yes, give Vista a go, probably want to keep aero off to keep things smoothest as possible. If you have something else to put that VU on to better use, I'd really recommend staying with good old XP for that kind of hardware.

I'm pretty sure Aero is required to run the MC interface. If you're like me and stash the MC box in another room and only connect through extenders, then you can turn off Aero. But if the MC box is connected to a TV, Aero probably needs to be on.

Edit: and that machine shouldn't have any troubles with Aero anyway, the video card is more than capable.

nah no hdtv I had stuttering problems with the video (when I attempted)
just a basic dvr system

how about the memory? since I see that everyone is using 4+ gigs for vista gaming
how much is really needed for a htpc?

yea I know it's not top of the line specs
I had xp pro on it for a year or so now
the HD decided to crash

was just wondering what others think

Aero isnt required to be enabled, nor is the DWM (I have both off on my HTPC). Hell, I dont even have aero basic on. Windows classic all the way, and MC looks and works exactly the same either way.

Well, should be pretty clear :

If you've already bought it, go Vista.

If you don't have it yet, why spend money on something that really won't make a hill of beans for that usage?
