Pretty soon you'll have someone in India taking your orders.

Actually, I doubt they'd outsource to India, unless they start using a different animal to make their burgers. :p

If you're in L.A. ... and you hear a person with a North Dakota accent taking your order, you'll know what we're up to

A North Dakota accent? Try Indian.

Last I checked didn't it have to be somewhere outside of the country in order for it to be considering outsourcing?

That is incredibly stupid. Yes, let's have someone who is not even onsite take your order, then send it back to someone onsite to complete that order.

Unbelieveable.

Besides, there's no such thing as an ND accent...we talk normally. ;)

Nope. Just means you hire an outside company to perform the duties.

Ah, okay, I always just assumed it meant you were moving said task to be performed outside of the country. *shrug*

The only time I ever go to McD's is when it's late at night and I haven't had dinner yet...
I always ask if there's going to be a wait for whatever item I want (sometimes they don't have any cooked) - I'm happy with 2 pies for $1, but sometimes it's a 10 minute wait - so I tell them nevermind.

I went to a McDonalds drive-thru in the hood once and the person taking the order asked, "What chew want?"

It is incredibably stupid.
If the sandwiches are made wrong due the the order taking, who do you have to yell at ??

Just a really stupid idea.
I can't even begin to tell you all the possibilities of screw up this can cause.

From an efficiency standpoint...the idea isn't that bad...from a practicality standpoint (service provided, logistics, etc.), the idea is horrible.

But let's get real for a moment- if you're going to set up the infrastructure to allow remote call centers to handle orders, why would you hire someone who's making just as much as the person you replaced? It's almost a certainty that they're going to use the infrastructure to allow cheap foreign labor to be used.

WTF?!? You are already paying someone minimum wage to do this task. I don't see how you could save any more money by outsourcing the job. /boggle

Because

two college drop-outs = 2 x $8.50/hour
1 college drop-out + indian = $8.50 + $2.00 /hour

They better not go cheap for the telecommunications lines, those order boxes have bad enough audio.

"Whah, whah, whah"
Okay so you want a Bigmac deal with coke.

I don't see what is so terrible about this, I doubt they would outsource to India since the reason they are doing it is to speed up the response time and have better communicators. I also don't think it would be a big deal if they screw up your order, because its not like you complain to the guy who took the order anyway, you either complain to the person giving you the food or the manager.

Exactly. That's why you can be sure that they're not going to eliminate a minimum wage job at the store and replace it with a minimum wage job in North Dakota. Since the worker no longer needs to be at the store, why pay someone in ND an equal wage when you can pay someone in India 1/5th the price?

They're already planning to set up the system so that people in *remote* locations can handle the orders and send the purchase info to the screens in the stores. The people doing that work can be anywhere on Earth.
