I was looking at McDonalds nutritional page to see what actually goes into it's food(Can be found in PDF format here), and I noticed that breakfast sausage contains MSG. I guess it's true what they say, you do learn something new everyday!

I've heard MSG is bad for you, why is that? Isn't it like salt or something?

msg is a flavor enhancer, used to accentuate "umami" (think of how meat tastes). it's only bad in large amounts or if you're particularly sensitive to it.

Monosodium Glutamate is in more stuff than you ever thought!

In excessive amounts it can be dangerous over time, but it's use is so common if there was any real danger we'd all be dead by now.

It breaks down the fibre of meats making them more tender or as an ingredient as a flavor enhancer.

Some people are alergic and it causes asthma-like symptoms. Oriental dishes contain tons of it....

It shouldn't be too surprising.

Just about every processed food that can contain MSG, does. It's a salty flavor.. They use it as a "flavor enhancer".

MSG is MonoSodiumGlutamate
Salt is SodiumChloride

It's believed that MSG tends to give a high percentage of it's weight to direct sodium absorbtion, the difference is that unlike salt you can't taste it and be overpowered by the high dose like you will with table salt. MSG is bad news for people with family histories of cardiovascular problems like high blood pressure.

My step-dad is alergic to it, when he eats something with a lot of MSG.. he always gets a severe headache.

I get migraines from it. Last Friday, I went to this Chinese Food place where the Sesame Chicken is the absolute best I've ever tasted. It's about the fifteenth time I went... and it ended up being the 4th time I've had migraine attacks right after. That Friday, my "aura" symptom started immediately after I took my last bite. They put a ton of MSG in it. I am giving up on that place, unfortunately. Migraines are the worst pain imaginable. <-- those words don't do them justice.

i've never met anyone allergic to MSG...anyways...apparently even the soy sauce packets that chinese food places have contain msg...

its funny though, some chinese places have these huge signs saying they do not put msg in their food yet you can see a huge tub of the stuff in the back, or in the trash...

Yes. Read the ingredients on the packaging of the noodles. It tells you MSG is in the powder that comes with it.

The packets of soy sauce specifically indicate NO MSG on it... and I tend to believe it. But NEVER believe places who have signs that say NO MSG... there's always some in their fried rice - at least. Go with white rice to be safe. ;) Then put some of that no-msg soy sauce/duck sauce in it.

It seems MOST sausage has MSG in it. And you would be supprised how many other thing do as well.

MSG gives me migrains, so I read the lables on everything I eat.

The up side is I no longer get migrains. The down side is it has ruined my eye sight. (Stupid small A$$ print!!)

There are some really funky stuff if you look at the lists of stuff:

I used to work there and look at the lists on the boxes and be amazed at all the chemicals..

Sausage: Pork, water, salt, sage, spices, corn syrup solids, dextrose, sugar, pepper, monosodium glutamate, natural flavoring (vegetable
source), BHA propyl gallate, citric acid. May contain whey protein concentrate.

What the heck is BHA propyl gallate ?

Regular & Quarter Pounder ® Buns: ammonium chloride, ascorbic acid, azodicarbomide, diacetyl tartaric acid esters of mono- and diglycerides, corn
flour, soy flour, calcium peroxide, mono- and diglycerides, propionic acid, phosphoric acid, ethoxylated mono- and diglycerides, wheat
flour, silicon dioxide, sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate, fungal enzymes, calcium propionate (as a preservative), sesame seeds on the Quarter

French Fries: natural color). Cooked in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an anti-foaming agent.

Joony, you sound like Cartman! ;) Sorry, I couldn't resist :D

As for the fact that MSG is only bad in large amounts makes me wonder as every single Chinese restaurant that I have been to here in NYC always has "NO MSG" on their menu's

MSG headaches stand to remain a clinically proven phenomenon.
MSG is an amino acid and occurs naturally in MANY foods.
In fact, you eat it way more than you'd ever expect. Anytime you see "natural flavoring" as an ingredient, guess what? It's probalby MSG.

Usually the "chinese food headache" occurs because of the high sodium content of the food wreaking havoc with your body's physiology.

BHA is a preservative. You'll see BHT and BHA in most cereals. I'm more interested in the "fungal enzymes". :Q

Exactly. MSG is also a mild preservative, but it is not used for that purpose primarily, since there are better preservatives available that cost about the same or less. MSG is usually used as a FLAVOR ENHANCER. How does it work? I have no clue, but it does. Study after study shows that people prefer the flavor of foods containing MSG over identical foods which differ only in that they contain no MSG.

They usually can not describe what or why one tastes better, it just does. It must work like crack or something. And yes, higher amounts of MSG can cause gastrointestinal...shall we say..."disturbances". It pulls water from the colon I believe.
