McDonalds Adds Poutine to Menu...

in Canada only.

McDonald’s will look to tap into Canadians’ patriotic nostalgia this winter by re-introducing our home and native poutine to its menus across the country (!), once again bringing a regional “delicacy” to the masses. Recently, the burger and fries chain also offered up its take on the East Coast lobster roll (chopped lobster meat on a half slice of white bread, toasted, essentially) across the country. The McLobster (or McHomard, depending where you are) is a regular offering in Quebec and New Brunswick.

The McExtra burger reportedly still pops up in Western Walmart locations, according to Wikipedia, and of course everyone remembers McPizza, if not for its enduring mark on our palates, than more for its sly use of the trademark Ms as cursive Zs. McDonald’s also once had a 1967 burger on its menu, not to celebrate the centenary of Canada, however, but in honour of the arrival of its first franchise within our borders.

At press time, we’ve heard only wild rumours of McDonairs, McTourtiere, McNanaimo Bars, a McOka burger and McMontreal Smoked Meat sandwiches. But hey, we can dream. The important take-out message is that “poutine is here” we assume for “a limited time only” but maybe as a “permanent item” for Canadians outside Quebec, and it’s made with french fries, gravy and real cheese curds, at least the last time we checked. How does the Twitterverse feel about this gut-busting development? See below. But more importantly, we want to know how you feel, so please answer our poll.

:awe:

Burger king has had poutine on the menu for a while in Canada. It tastes really horrible though.

I'm surprised McD's didn't already have this, they have regional food in a lot of areas.

I need more poutine. Hard to get in California though.

I was going to snap this pic at my local Trader Joe's the other day, but I did not have my phone with me. Luckily, the internet exists.

you're welcome.

I'd had Harvey's poutine and it's not great. Mind you my French Canadian co-worker swears you can't get anything close to decent outside of Montreal.

Nice, I'm going to have to try this. Though, fast food grade poutine is usually not comparable to chip stand quality poutine. But still good nonetheless. Wendy's has poutine too, they have a "ultimate Canadian combo" (or something like that). It's the Baconator, with a poutine. does not get any more Canadian than that. Well I guess it could come with a maple syrup based desert.

I had the Wendy's poutine when they were doing that, it blew chunks.

Yeah it does not compare to a real poutine. I'll eat it, but if I'm craving a poutine, that's not where I'll be going.

Trick is to look at the health unit's website where they list establishments that failed inspections. Seriously, the best poutine comes from those places. :awe: you order from those places, you don't go there to pick it up.

I work for a Canadian company and they have a yearly get together where they fly us all up to Toronto, put us in a nice hotel for the weekend, do a few events, eat nice places, etc... My wife and I got delayed in Chicago due to weather and came in several hours late, missing dinner, but they were still serving in the bar. They had an awesome sounding beef dish with poutine on the side, so I ordered that up with a nice beer and... wait, what, these fuckers ate all the god damn poutine? FUCK YOU GUYS!

None of the other places we ate at had it either. So now I'm up to three trips to Canada (two of these events plus my original interview) and I still haven't been able to try poutine. 🙁

When they flew me up for the interview (several years ago), they took me to Lone Star Steakhouse for lunch. Seriously guys, my first trip to Canada and you take me to a US chain restaurant in a city full of awesome places to eat. Heh. Oh well, the company is awesome though, even though they're hiding all the poutine from me.
