Last night Chris Matthews ("Hardball") had some Repub insiders on to speak about likely VP choices. Their speculation:

1. MN Gov Tim Pawlenty

2. SC Gov Sanford

3. MS Gov Haley Barbour (Former head of the RNC too)

4. FL Gov Christ

5. Bailey - Hutchins (sp?) Senator from TX.

6. Name? There was another guy, fairly young known as being a tax cutter. I thought he was from Ohio but can't remember or find him. Maybe somebody else knows?

Huckabee is an obvious ommission, and not by accident.

The concensus sems to be the most likely are #1, 2, 6 (in no particular order).

Most think the VP will be young (the "change" thingy) and someone loved/trusted by the conservative establishment (McCain's weakness).

Personally, I doubt Christ would do it, he just got elected.

I'm not sure if Tim Pawlenty would do it. He's about as "genuine" of a guy you can find in politics these days. I honestly don't believe he'd like to be associated with McCain much, as he supports bombing Iran and such.

I'd go with Sanford, Sanford is an excellent Governor.

^ Are you guys from MN and SC?

None of them are high profile enough IMO.

Some time ago we had a post here where it was emphasized that the last thing McCain needs is a high profile running mate. I don't know if that's true, but the idea was that McCain is already so well known.

Part of why these people are mentioned is because of the states they come from, and their electoral importance - either in that specific state or the geographical region. E.g., McCain did pretty crappy in the South, and Ohio is an important swing state.

my money would be on 2 or 4.

McCain needs someone who can campaign in deep red states for him.

Huckabee was on a lot of people's lists before he really wore out his welcome. he should have dropped out when it became mathematically impossible to win.

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is probably out as VP. She is somewhat pro-choice. And with the pro-life /social conservative folks, that is like saying someone is somewhat pregnant.

Pawlenty is an obvious consideration but I am not sure he can deliver Minnesota though he is about the best Midwest governor the Republicans can run.

As regards to the the Ohio representative. You are either thinking about former Rep. John Kasich (former budget Committee Chair) and TV host on Fox or former Rep. Robert Portman, former Trade Rep and OMB director.

Right now, I would lean toward 1 or 4. Some of that depoends on how Huckabee acts when he finally concedes.

Great, I'm down in NC so don't know much about. But I have heard his name numerous times. So, I could recall him unlike the Ohio guy.

Looks like he's strong on domestic issues (fiscal, economy eductaion etc.). I also see he's tougher on immigration than McCain (one of his weak points in the GOP).

You say he doesn't wanna be associated with McCain, but I'm under the impression they are friends and that pawlenty suports McCain?

I gotta go look for teh Ohio guy again.

Yeah, Portman. That's it!

I recall the part about being OMB Director. The guy sounds like he could really help McCain with economic issues (again, a Mc weakness)

Some advocate Kay Bailey Hutchinson thinking she could pick up females dissapointed by Hillary's not getting the Dem nomination. But she's been in DC for a long time and is not young. Blows the whole "change" thing (other than being a woman).

Thanks

I just heard him say he's totally not interested at the recent Gov dinner at the WH. Course, why put much stock in that?

BTW: McCain says that they are still developing the process for choosing a VP. haven't yet moved on to compiling a list yet.

Rick Perry is a steaming pile of rotten pig shit, he should go back to sucking the open-sore cocks of the various corrupt assholes that he associates with. Worst US politician since LBJ, and yes, I'm including the current bunch of assholes in the White House.

They may be friends or even support one another, but from my experience seeing Pawlenty in person (and on the news) that he's not really in the same league as McCain. From what I can tell, Pawlenty is more old school conservative, while McCain is one of the more new school conservatives (more liberal, neo con, lets blow things up)... I just don't know if they are really compatible.

I've heard Pawlenty say multiple times he does not want to be president or vice president. Even years ago. He has no interest in such things. He wants to serve Minnesota because he cares about Minnesota, and has no interest in "power" or running the country.

Wow. Tell us how you really feel. You were so vehement that I looked him up, and it seems that quite a few people in Texas share your point of view.

There are no viable woman GOP governors. Most of them are too moderate and pro-choice. Palin is about the only one that is conservative enough but she is one year removed from being a mayor of a small Alaskan town. I think McCain cannot make the experience argument with a straight face against Obama if he picked Palin.

I'm paleo-conservative with liberal social values (ie; keep the gov't out of our wallets AND our lives as much as logically possible), and most of my friends are pretty mainstream right-wing. They hate him as much as I do. Unfortunately, the Texas legislature is hopelessly corrupt, and our governor's races are tragicomedy at it's best/worst. Any of the alternatives to Perry would have been great, but we had so many different folks running that it seriously diluted any chance of defeating Perry. Putting the votes together, Perry won with only 39% of the active vote. Which means that 61% of the actual voters themselves did not want Perry's lying sack of shit, but couldn't agree on who the best choice was.
