Price is $39.95 -- rebate is $40.

However, Sam's rebate flyer says $30 rebate while box says $40. So to get the 40 bucks you have to call a toll free number and they will give you a special code to put on your rebate form.

I tried talking the store manager into selling it to me for $29.95 so that I wouldn't have to make the phone call. No go, but you might try your stores manager.

Similiar deal at Costco. $39.99 for the bundle, with a $40 rebate. At Costco, rebate forms are almost always printed up with your receipt. You just mail in the completed rebate form and voila!

just a word of warning. I have MacAfee virusscan on my winXP Pro box and it crashes a lot. I have updated the actuall software to ver 6.01.2000.1 but that didn't help much. If i was in the market for virusscan software, i would go Norton. Norton is like $20 after all the rebates and stuff.

Heh, heh, on the boxes is says, "Designed for WindowsXP".

Anyone else have a problem or success with this version of McAfee?

VirusScan 6.0 is crap. I had to uninstall it 2-3 times on a win2k machine to get it installed right and not crash. FYI, just install the virus scan part, don't pick to install the crappy Firewall, etc... option. Same w/ my win98 machine... had to uninstall & install 2-3 times... the update helped a little.

I've set it to scan at night, but doesn't seem to work. If anyone's interested, I'll sell you my version for $10 shipped.

Overall a poor product. I had like the 4.0 version and that seemed fine...

I have 6.01 also and have not been able to schedule scans and I will sometimes get a dump error when running a scan. I really don't want to buy new software!

The only program that ive seen from mcafee that was ever worth anything was virusscan... now it looks like they are finding a way to screw that up with xp also.If youve seen a good program from mcafee its probably because they bought it from a quality company, like their firewall which isnt really theirs...
Thanks for that link copperas, important info there...mcafee sucks and they got my last dollar sometime ago.

I just checked the online rebate form at Samsclub.com and it showed the rebate as being $40. Just submit and print the form from there and you should be ok (I assume you'll be ok even with the normal in-store form since it is obviously a typo).

I have tried to install McAfee 6.0 on (2) of my Win98 machines about 4-8 times each. I waited a week or two in between installation attempts. I would get really weird error messages and lock ups, etc.... I now have Norton Antivirus installed happily on both my machines.

There are two McAfee anti-virus bundle rebates on the Sam's Club rebate page. (www.samsclub.com, click the "rebates" tab at the top, select "computer software" on the category list, click "go")

#25 is a $30 rebate for item #898120- McAfee VirusScan/Uninstaller Software Bundle Pack. This one is listed on the in-store rebate flyers.

#50 is a $40 rebate for item #770336- McAfee VirusScan/QuickClean Software Bundle Pack. This one is not listed on the in-store rebate flyers.

I bought this bundle as a way to increase my Click & Pull order of the WD 100 GB hard drive to the $250 Click & Pull minimum. I'm not sure that I will install it. I had an earlier version of the McAfee Office suite (including antivirus) installed on my machine a couple of years ago and had some stability problems, which went away after I uninstalled it. I don't know if it was a problem inherent to the McAfee software or something else on my system. It was kind of a pain to remove, as I recall.

A perfect example of what I mentioned above. It was inherent to the software.Thousands of users thought it was something wrong with their system when the programs mcafee sold as a package could not even co-exist with each other and utilities that were supposed to fix things caused many more blue screens and lockups than those users had before the install.I even remember an open letter from a tech agent thanking mcafee for multiplying his business singlehandedly. He encouraged them to keep it up...

A client of mine just lost two day's worth of work and $1400 worth of tech support due to a virus that McAfee didn't catch. Yes, they were running the most current definitions.

We switched to Norton 2002.

I'm just made a recommendation to a new client to switch from McAfee to Trend. McAfee would have to pay me to take their products. I'm referring to their $1,000 Total Virus Defense suite and Viruscan software. The updates don't work reliably, and they totally screw up whenever there is a new virus. Last Tuesday, for example, they took half a day to release a new definition file for the goner virus, and even then, their software would not pick up the update. I had to download the file manually. Trend, as usual, was on top of things--had the new file one hour after the virus was discovered. In fact, I had to use Trend's web scanner to scan the desktops that had McAfee installed.

I almost bought a copy of McAfee Internet Security this week at CompUSA. In fact, I was on line with it and realized that it was missing the rebate form so I got off line to get another copy, then realized that the seal wasn't perfect so I went to get another and by the time I got back the line was too long so I said to hell with it. I was kind of ambivalent about whether I even wanted to try it -- when I last tried Guard Dog (which MIS is based on) last year, it trashed my machine and I had to uninstall it, and even had Beyond.com issue me a refund (downloaded software) -- even though it was free after rebate. I had 2 copies of McAfee AV at home, one I got at Amazon when it was free after rebate and I had a $5 off coupon so it was better than free. The other I got with this Sam's Club package and I just sold it for the sales tax to a co-worker who wants it for a friend whose machine is already screwed up (oh, I bought it in the first place to finally be able to use a $10 off $50 coupon that Discover had sent me for Sams Club). I guess I will not be installing it. The QuickClean program seems ok, I have not seen any obvious problems due to it.

<< HLS standard for virus detection is McAfee Virus Scan >>

Harvard

Hmmmm, maybe you need a Harvard education to properly use McAfee Virus Scan, huh?
