Hey guys! I was at a client's house last night and we removed his expired McAfee bundle that came with his Dell last year. We went with Kaspersky because it kicks ass and has a decent price.
Anyways, he wanted to try out LimeWire and I also explained how to use Torrents/BitTorrent because he had heard about these programs at work. Despite the Add/Remove programs of the McAfee Security Center programs and other software, Windows Security Center still claims there is now "two antivirus programs running" and that "McAfee Personal Firewall Plus is currently ON" and still running! WTH! There's no processes that are running by the name of McAfee, the Program Files folder is removed and I have no bloody idea how to rid of this Dell bundle infestation without reformatting!
To make matters worse and to get to my point, I am positive the firewall software is still running. Whether I disable the Windows XP built-in firewall or not, the downloads still run at 1kb/sec in both LimeWire and BitTorrent. There is no hardware router with his broadband connection. He uses a company called "GoMoorhead" that basically has WAPs setup on most of the telephone poles in town and then your client wireless card is authenticated when you hop on a WAP by logging in. We called up GoMoorhead last night and they aren't blocking anything on their end and the CSR said it was an odd issue and assured us they aren't detouring our efforts to use the programs.
It would almost seem like McAfee is still in the registry some how and that the default values for the firewall are still in effect. BT lights turn green (meaning it can seed and has optimal connection) and LimeWire has a 'Turbo-charged' connection, whatever that may mean.
Cliffs:
1. McAfee software sucks; won't really remove itself after proper uninstallation.
2. Downloads over BitTorrent and LimeWire never exceed 1kb/sec.
3. Windows Security Center software reports that McAfee is still on the machine.
4. Definitely seems like McAfee is still on there, blocking the speeds we should be getting.
5. How do I remove McAfee successfully - formatting isn't an option!
Thanks in advance fellas!
