Looks like Mcafee has taken up the Vista & the M$ Live OneCare challenge.
A first glimpse of what to expect from the security software industry was provided today by McAfee with beta versions of its upcoming packages "Total Protection" and "Virus Scan Plus." It's not just about virus protection, anti-spyware and firewalls anymore. McAfee's software will defend users by virtually any common and currently emerging security threats - and go beyond the functionality of OneCare.

McAfee would have to pay ME to install this junk!

Not to thread-crap, but seriously take caution - I've worked on a lot of machines that have had McAfee suites installed (namely Dells) on it and upon uninstallation, the firewall is never fully removed. I've called their tech support services before on several occasions and have never found the answer to remove the issue. The firewall stays in place, which is verified by the Security Center portion of XP - says McAfee firewall is on, and literally halts P2P and BitTorrent traffic. Obviously you cannot configure a firewall when the software is uninstalled, either.

The only way I've defeated this is with a full reinstall of the OS. I've seen a KB article on Microsoft's site that explains how to fix this issue, but it has never worked.

Just a serious FYI and warning for anyone interested in this beta program.

I too, have had a lot of trouble with Mcafee in the past. I don't use it anymore. I had to format three hard drives from two different versions of mcafee on work machines and then reload the OS. I'll never use them again. Again, not to threadcrap either, but just give a warning also.

Eh, I've never had a problem with McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, and I've used it on thousands of computers. Thanks for the link, OP.

I have never had that much of a problem with the security suite with McAfee, though I have many times with Norton (especially their system works, I can't stand that pile of junk) I too use McAfee enterprise and it works great, plus I have installed it on a few hundred computers. Though there are times it gets messed up because we use it in a school with epolicy orchestrator and I have had to clean it up and unistall it, but I have gotten it to work 99% of the time.

McAfee's security suite is getting a little bloated, but that is something they are working on. I am sure they have re-designed this new product, but who knows? I'd give it a shot if it's free.

Yes, Symantec and McAfee are both on my DO NOT BUY list. :)

In my experience, the McAfee suite pre-installed by Dell is a little obtrusive and tough to manage. I had previously used TrendMicro at home, but now that my licenses have expired I've switched some PCs over to the Microsoft OneCare beta. I also purchased a few one care licenses from Circuit City for $9.99.

So far I've got no complaints with OneCare at all. Doesn't seem to slow down the PC noticably... But then again I don't think I've ever gotten a virus, so it could be doing nothing at all and I'd be happy with it.
