scan32.exe takes up 40% of my cpu at times, and it bogs down my system like crazy. Is there any way i can make this thing less intrusive, or better yet, disable it without admin rights? I am going to call the help desk tomorrow and complain.

What version of McAfee are you running?

With that high % of CPU, it sounds like they have it scheduled to do system scans during the work day. Maybe you can find out if they have Administrator scans scheduled for your working hours and get them to change it.

Then there is probably nothing you can do. And whatever you try to do is going to be evident to I.T. when they look at their ePO logs. If it's your employer's computer, then talking to I.T. is the right way to handle this.

Check the macfee configuration. If that is fine then it might be an scheduled scan which is "hanging" on a particularly large file.Download and install the most recent Superdat. It sometimes fixes those issues by reinstalling the 4400 scan engine and the most recent virus definitions.

I feel your pain...I HATE Macfee with a passion...except we get daily virus definition updates throughout the day at work with quick scan's after each update (scheduled for 4-6 times throughout the day).

The download, update, and scan take about 15 minutes and it pegs my machine at 99% rendering it un-usable...

I work in I.T. and I still can't get a straight answer :) Probably doesn't help that my laptop is a POS too

You are not only ones. In my case, scaner takes at least 12 hours a day. Even as admin you cannot kill the process directly. Ask your admin to move scans to night.
