MB's with DisplayPort or TB can be used instead?

I'm looking to build a Hackintosh and use a 4K monitor. I'm going to use the IGP on the 4690K chip as I'm not really worried about gaming at this time.

Now that I'm researching monitors I'm seeing that they seem to require DP to run at 60Hz.

Most MB's don't seem to have DP? I guess it's expected you'll have a discrete GPU?

Then I saw that Mini Display Port is compatible with TB perhaps?

Forgive me as I'm years behind on all the new protocols. It's been since XP that I've build a system.

Also, Apple doesn't list many monitors as compatible, so not sure how much of an issue that is?

Thanks in advance!

I have a hacknintosh that I build around the Intel 4770k and Gigabyte Z97 ITX WiFi. Sadly, no display port to test my Asus 4k monitor with this motherboard. Waiting on the multi beast update for El Capitan to see if all my sleep/wake issues are resolved. As much as I love AMD cards, I will be buying a Nvidia card shortly for this PC so I can use my 4k monitors at full res/hz. Nvidia have official OSX drivers whereas AMD does not.

There are plenty of mainboards out there with DisplayPort. One does have to dig a bit though. Whether they're compatible for a hackintosh, I can't say.

If you just need a no-frills, cheap board with DisplayPort for that 4690K, the Asus B85M-E or B85M-E R2.0 are good candidates.

Yeah, I didn't dig too far, but when looking at the lists for Gigabyte it didn't seem they were on the Z97 boards and were on the 85's like you said....I don't know much about those, but sticking with Z97 is wise for a Hackintosh. Not sure if the board output works either....have to research that one.

For building a Hackintosh, it's widely recommended to go with a Gigabyte motherboard.
The least expensive Z97 Gigabyte board with DP is:

GIGABYTE GA-G1.Sniper Z97

Or: if you're willing to gamble on a refurbished/open box board, Newegg currently has several of the same model for as low as $89.99.

Choice of a monitor for a Hackintosh shouldn't present any kind of problem, other than matching the PC's video output port type to one of the monitor's available input port types.

Does anyone know if TB is compatible with mini display port at least?

Which device are you talking about that has a Thunderbolt port?
Unless you've already purchased a Thunderbolt port equipped monitor, I would simply stay away from using any kind of Thunderbolt port devices. At least for a Hackintosh machine, anyway.

Thanks for finding that, I'll have to look into it. I'm trying to use a board that has a lot of use in the Hackintosh community so as to find guides, etc...

When I started looking at specs I was surprised to see that DP isn't that common on the average board. At this point I'd probably opt for going with the cheaper board and buying a GPU with DP if I had to.

Some of the monitors have them now and the boards as well...I just thought if mini-DP is compatible it could solve a potential connectivity issue depending on what MB and monitor I pick.

Thanks for the help.
