MBP Running HOT

It seems like my MBP has been running progressively hotter lately. I have the generation right before the unibodies with Snow Leopard installed. I noticed it ran hotter with Snow Leopard (a known issue I think) but its not like I just installed it and am noticing it, its been on my computer since September or whenever it came out. I was playing World of Warcraft last night *bows head shamefully* and opened up dashboard to look at the temperature on iStat and my CPU was running at 86* C. The highest I ever remember it being was 77* C. Anyone have any idea why this is running so hot or know of a solution to it?

That's normal. if it exceeds 90 degrees that's too hot.

get smcFanControl or whatever it's called and set the fan speeds a bit higher if you want lower temps. I also found that it got a lot hotter in my lap than on a desk.

Is it gonna hurt anything if I set the minimum fan speed up a little higher? Like to 5000 RPM?

Might make it fail in a shorter time since you're spinning it at a faster rate. But other than that you should be fine.

You also might want to consider the possibility of there being dust clogged in fan or heatsink. Inadequate air flow can cause the temps to rise especially considering how thin the MacBook Pros are (and therefore already kind of pushing the whole, efficient cooling setup thing).

Is that something remotely easy to fix? (Also idk if you saw this but I'm pre-unibody, so it's not SUPER thin)

Pre Unibody MacBook Pros were still 1" thick, not exactly a fat laptop. Easy to fix... that is debatable. But, you should be able to get some canned air blowing in there without opening it up. Though, if you are so inclined, opening it up will make the job more thorough.
