MBP + 30" Dell does not work

I have a MBP, a converter: mini dvi to dual link DVI and a Dell 30" display. When I plug it in, the resolution becomes 1900*1200. If I switch to the native 2500*1600 (or what ever it is) then the image become shitty.I also tried with my friends air, with the same result. Any one have experience with this?

You have to use an Active adapter to go from MiniDP (displayport, not DVI, no MacBook Pro ever had miniDVI that I am aware of) to dual link DVI. Apple sells one for $99, and it hooks to both MiniDP and USB.

I recall that early on there were issues, perhaps they still persist. How old is the adapter? Any chance there are updates available for the firmware?

Which Dell display? 3007, 3008, 3011? Because if you have the option (u3011), you should be using mini displayport to full size displayport and not dealing with DVI at all.

What model macbook pro do you have. I remember my friend saying the older ones do not support 2560x1600.

EDIT: i was looking at the specs for the older ones and couldn't find any that don't so I guess that is wrong

specific MBP model would help. what kind of graphics? is it mini DisplayPort or mini DVI?

for example:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/app...k-pro-core-2-duo-2.2-15-santa-rosa-specs.html

"2nd Display Support: Dual/Mirroring

2nd Max. Resolution: 2560x1600
Details: Simultaneously supports native resolution on the internal display and a maximum of 2560x1600 on an external display."

The last generation PowerBooks (so G4 @1.5GHz+ at least) supported DVI-Dual Link. The Pre-Unibodies had full DVI adapters that supported Dual Link, and the Unibody MBPs have MiniDisplayPort that supports 2560*1600 with an active adapter. There have never been any MacBook Pros with MiniDVI. The 12" PowerBook had MiniDVI, but that was it.

Your DVI cable is probably not Dual link
